HP LaserJet MFP, HP PageWide Enterprise MFP, HP Managed MFP - Set up the printer to scan in macOS

To use Apple's Image Capture, the HP Easy Scan app, or other scan methods, the HP printer must be configured to meet the eSCL protocol needed to scan using an AirPrint or network connection.

Follow these steps to download and install the latest scan software and enable eSCL so you can scan from macOS.

Step one: Get the latest scan software

To scan using HP Easy Scan, or to get the latest software needed for scanning, download and install the latest HP Easy Start utility.

The HP Easy Start utility includes fax and/or scan drivers, and advanced HP features (HP Easy Scan, HP Easy Color, custom paper sizes, job storage, folder or stapler finishing, watermark, etc.).

For HP EasyStart compatible printers, go to HP LaserJet, HP OfficeJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise, HP Managed - Printers compatible with macOS Monterey 12.0, macOS Big Sur 11.0, and macOS Catalina 10.15.

Note:

HP Easy Scan is compatible with macOS 10.11 (and newer) and is the recommended scanning application for an HP LaserJet Pro MFP.

Proceed with one of the following options:

  • If you have previously installed the printer using HP Easy Start, launch the HP Easy Start app from the dock and follow the onscreen instructions.

  • For first-time printer installs, follow these steps:

    1. Go to 123.hp.com.

    2. Enter your printer model number.

    3. Click Install HP Easy Start to install the HP Easy Start utility.

    4. Follow the onscreen instructions to launch the app, select the printer, and then let the utility automatically install the driver(s) and add the print queue.

Step two: Enable eSCL to allow scanning to the HP printer

To enable the printer to work with Image Capture when scanning in macOS, you must first enable eSCL in the printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Follow these steps to enable eSCL in the EWS.

Step one: Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Before you can access the Embedded Web Server (EWS), you must first obtain the printer's IP address using the printer control panel. Once you have the printer's IP address, enter it into a web browser to access the EWS.

Note:

Your printer must be connected to an IP-based network before you can access the EWS.

Follow these steps to obtain the printer's IP address and then enter it into a web browser to access the EWS.

  1. Locate the IP address on the printer control panel:

    Note:

    The steps to locate the IP address vary according to the printer model and control panel type.

    1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon Wireless icon, or the Ethernet icon Ethernet icon, to view the printer's IP address or host name.

      Note:

      On newer LaserJet or PageWide Enterprise printer models, touch the Information icon Information icon before touching the Wireless or Ethernet icon.

  2. Open the Embedded Web Server:

    1. On your computer, open a Web browser, and in the address bar, type the printer's IP address or host name exactly as it displayed on the printer control panel.

    2. Press Enter on the computer keyboard.

      The EWS opens.

Step two: Enable eSCL in the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Once you have opened the Embedded Web Server (EWS) in a web browser, follow these steps to enable eSCL.

  1. On the EWS Home page, click the Networking tab.

  2. In the left navigation pane, click Advanced or Other Settings (varies depending on the printer model).

  3. Select the "eSCL" or "WebScan" option that is available in the EWS menu. The name of the option varies between printer models and firmware versions, but it will be one of the following:

    • eSCL

    • Secure eSCL

    • WebScan

    • Secure WebScan

  4. Click Apply.

  5. Click the Security tab, and if available, select Enable Remote User Auto Capture and WebScan Auto Capture Jobs.

  6. Click Apply, and then click OK.

If the printer supports scanning with Image Capture, you can also scan from Apple's Preview or Print & Scan window.
