HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521, MFP M570 - Fluorescent highlighter text is not visible on copy or scan

Issue

When scanning highlighted images or text objects, the image might appear lighter than expected or is not visible when using certain types of highlighter pens.

  1. Original text
  2. Copy/scan text

Workaround

Due to the hardware and firmware limitation in older HP LaserJet Pro printers, use one of the following options to resolve this issue:
  • Option one: Avoid using a yellow highlighter to copy. Use darker highlighters such as orange, pink or blue.
    note:
The darker highlighter used will be visible on the printed page but might not have the same color on the copy.
  • Option two: Purchase any one of the following HP LaserJet Enterprise printers as it has more firmware features and setting options to improve the copy quality.
    • HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M527 series
    • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M577 series
  • Option three: Purchase any one of the latest HP LaserJet Pro printers listed below:
    • HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426
    • HP LaserJet Pro MFP M427
    • HP Color LaserJet MFP M477

Cause

Fluorescent highlighter inks tend to reflect more light than that which is absorbed by the paper source. This reflection might cause the image not to be visible or to be interpreted by the copier or scanner. Also, color and ink properties vary greatly depending upon the brand of highlighter used. Due to these differences, highlighted text in copied or scanned images might vary from not being visible at all to changes in color (orange highlighter could appear brown in the copy/scan, for example).

Background

Highlighters are usually fluorescent colors. Although there are different types of highlighter colors (pink, blue, green, orange, and purple), the most common color used is yellow. As the yellow highlighter is the lightest and most challenging, in some cases, it will be like invisible ink in the copy or scan.

Affected Products

This issue applies to the following printers:
  • HP LaserJet Pro MFP M521 series
  • HP LaserJet Pro 500 color MFP M570 series
