Loading Paper, Envelopes, Cards, Photo Paper, and Specialty Paper for HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter Series

Introduction

This document provides instructions for loading plain paper and special paper such as card stock, envelopes, photo paper, and labels.

Loading plain paper

If your printer includes Tray 2 as an optional accessory, perform the following steps for Tray 1 and Tray 2.

note:
Tray 2 supports only plain white letter or A4 paper. Do not load any other paper in Tray 2.

Pull out the paper tray.

note:
To load Legal size paper, press and hold the release latch on the inside, top-left corner of the paper tray, and then gently pull out the tray to extend it.
Load plain white paper print-side down in the center of the tray. Make sure the stack of paper is no higher than the paper stack guide located on the side of the tray.

Press and hold the paper guide release latches on the inside left and top of the paper tray, and then slide the paper guides in until they rest against the edges of the paper.

Reinsert the paper tray.

Loading specialty paper

Follow these steps to load specialty paper such as card stock, envelopes, photo paper, or labels.

Before proceeding, click here to view the paper specifications for your printer to make sure that your printer supports the size, type, and weight of the paper that you want to print.

note:
You can only print on special paper from Tray 1. Specialty paper cannot be printed from Tray 2, if your printer has one.

Loading Envelopes

Follow these steps to load envelopes in Tray 1.

Pull out paper Tray 1.

note:
Load envelopes in Tray 1. Tray 2 is for plain paper only.
Slide out the paper guides.
Insert envelopes print-side down in the center of the tray.

Make sure the stack of envelopes is no higher than the paper stack guide located on the side of the tray.

Press and hold the paper guide release latches on the inside left and top of the paper tray, and then slide the paper guides in until they rest against the edges of the envelopes.
Reinsert the paper tray.
Pull out the extension on the output tray.

Loading cards, photo paper, and custom-size paper

Follow these steps to load cards, photo paper, or custom-size paper in Tray 1.

note:
Defining custom-sized paper in the HP printing software (driver) is only available in Mac operating systems. Windows users can specify custom-size paper from within third-party software such as Microsoft Office Word.

Store photo paper in its original packaging inside a resealable plastic bag. Store the paper on a flat surface in a cool, dry place. Load photo paper only when you are ready to print, and then put the unused paper back in its packaging.

Pull out paper Tray 1.

Load cards, photo paper, or custom-size paper in Tray 1. Tray 2 is for plain paper, only.
Slide out the paper guides.
Insert the cards, photo paper, or custom-size paper print-side down in the center of the tray.
Make sure the paper stack is no higher than the paper stack guide located on the side of the tray.

Changing the default paper tray

By default, the printer draws paper from Tray 1. If Tray 1 is empty, the printer draws paper from Tray 2 (if it is installed and loaded with paper). You can change this default behavior by manually setting the default tray within the software you use to print.

Follow these steps to manually set the default tray within the software you use to print.

In the program from which you want to print, click File, and then click Print. The Print window opens.
Click the Properties button. The Print Properties window opens.
Select the Print/Quality tab.
Select the default tray from which you want to print from the Source is: drop-down menu.
Click OK to close the Print Properties window.
Click OK to close the Print window.
