HP 40gs Graphing Calculator - Manipulating Expressions in the EquationWriter

The EquationWriter
The HP 40gs contains an application known as the EquationWriter that is able to solve a wide range of problems. To access the EquationWriter, make sure the HP 40gs is in the home view by pressing the key. When in the home view, the display will look similar to the one shown below.

The EquationWriter is one of the most useful tools built into the HP 40gs calculator. With it, you can work through complicated calculations and see the equation take shape before your eyes. Since the EquationWriter displays the evolving calculation in a textbook format, it is possible to easily compare the display to an equation on paper and ensure proper entry. The arrow keys allow movement around the EquationWriter screen to make changes to different areas of the expression being entered.
The EquationWriter environment includes several tools for manipulating expressions entered. These tools are found in the menu. These tools include the ability to cut, copy, and paste portions of an expression to other areas within an expression as well as edit portions of an expression without affecting the remainder of the expression.
Some of these uses are illustrated by the example problems below.

Answer
The point of this example is not so much to come to a numeric answer, but to show how the EquationWriter might work in practice. It is designed to be an interactive scratchpad, where you work through problems in any way you want. The editing tools provide a way to change your mind in the middle of a problem.
