HP Designjet 2800CP and 3800CP Printers - Printer Driver Settings with the Fiery X2-CP RIP

How the Fiery X2-CP works

The Fiery X2-CP receives files from computers on the network, processes (RIPs) those files, and then sends them to the printer’s print engine for printing. When printing from an application, your Windows or Mac OS computer communicates with the Fiery X2-CP by means of a PostScript (R) printer driver and a PostScript printer description file (PPD).

About PostScript printer drivers and PPDs

  • A PostScript printer driver is an application that manages printing communication between your application software and the printer. It interprets the instructions generated by the application software, merges those instructions with printer-specific PPD options you specify (see below), and translates all that information into PostScript, a language the printer understands. In other words, the printer driver writes a PostScript file based on your original file and the options you set from the Print dialog box.
  • A PPD file contains information about a particular device’s features and capabilities (for example, the paper sizes and media types supported). The PostScript printer driver reads the information in the PPD file and presents that information to you in the form of options you can choose from the Print dialog box. The PPD for the Fiery X2-CP includes information about the features of both the printer and the Fiery X2-CP.

To copy the printer description files

  1. On the User Software CD or your hard disk, open the English\Instalrs\Ps_drvr folder, and then open the Win_9x or Win_nt4x folder, depending on the version of Windows you are using.
  2. Copy the printer description file for your Fiery X2-CP to the appropriate location.
If you use:
Copy this file:
To this location:
PageMaker 5.0 or later
eflh3011.ppd
For PageMaker 5.0, ALDUS\USENGLSH\PPD4
For PageMaker 6.0, \PM6\RSRC\USENGLSH\PPD4
For PageMaker 6.5, \PM65\RSRC\USENGLSH\PPD4

Print options and settings

To find out about the current Setup defaults, print the Configuration page from the Fiery X2-CP Control Panel.
The override hierarchy is as follows:
  • A user’s printer driver settings override the Fiery X2-CP Setup settings.
  • Settings made from Fiery WebSpooler or Fiery Spooler override the user’s printer driver settings.
Options and settings:
Description:
Requirements, constraints, and information:
Auto Scale On/Off
Select On to automatically scale an image up or down from its original page size to the override page size you specify.
This option is available only as a Fiery Spooler or Fiery WebSpooler override. If this option is set to On, the Scale option must be set to Printer’s Default.
Auto Sheet Cut Off/On/
Specifies whether the printer will automatically cut the media after printing each image.
Brightness 85% Lightest/ 90% Lighter/95% Light/ 100% Normal/105% Dark/ 110% Darker/115% Darkest
Specifies image brightness. 85% produces a substantially lighter image, 115% produces a substantially darker image.
CMYK Simulation Method Quick/Full
Select Quick to utilize one-dimensional transfer curves to adjust density output of individual color channels. Select Full to utilize four-dimensional transfer curves, which adjust for hue as well as density of individual color channels.
See Appendix A in your User's Guide for more information.
CMYK Simulation Profile SWOP-Coated/ DIC/Euroscale/Simulation-1/ Simulation-2/Simulation-3/ Simulation-4/Simulation-5/ Simulation-6/Simulation-7/ Simulation-8/Simulation-9/ Simulation-10//Match Copy/None
Specifies the press simulation to use for an individual print job and does not affect the resident simulation on the Fiery X2-CP.
See Appendix A in your User's Guide for more information. Custom simulations must be defined before users select them. For information about defining custom simulations, see your User's Guide.
Color Mode CMYK/Grayscale
Specifies the color mode for the current print job. Select CMYK for a full-color document or Grayscale for a grayscale or black-and-white document.
Copies 1 - 999
Specifies the number of copies of the job to print.
Custom Output Direction Long Edge First/ Short Edge First
Specifies whether the short edge or long edge prints along the width of the media.
See Appendix A in your User's Guide for more information.
Dry Time None/2 min./ 5 min./10 min./20 min.
Specifies the length of time in minutes allowed for drying before the job is unloaded or cut.
If you change the dry time setting to a value other than None from either the Print Options dialog box of an application or from the Fiery Spooler, the setting remains in effect until subsequent setting changes it. If you cancel a print job that had a dry time assigned to it, the Fiery X2-CP will still allow the dry time to expire before processing another job.
High Speed On/Off
  • Select Off for standard HP printer modes.
  • Select On for faster printing and comparable to better quality.
Image Preview On/Off
Specifies whether a preview of the image is presented.
  • With this option On, the job previews in the Fiery WebSpooler Thumbnail A window. To print the job after viewing the preview, click the printer icon in the Thumbnail A window.
  • With this option Off, the job prints to the printer immediately.
For more information, see your User's Guide.
Ink Reduction On/Off
Specifies whether to reduce the total amount of ink used for a print job. The Fiery X2-CP determines the amount of the reduction based on the default ink and media combination used.
Ink Type Indoor/Outdoor
Specifies the type of ink.
Media Saver Mode On/Off
Specifies whether to print multiple copies of a job across the width of the media with a 1/4 inch margin between pages.
See Appendix A in your User's Guide for more information.
Media Type High Gloss Photo Paper/ Semi-Gloss Photo Paper/ Coated/Heavy Coated/ Banner/Opaque Vinyl/ Colorfast Adhesive Vinyl/ Paper-Based Semi-Gloss/ Canvas/Clear Imaging Media
Specifies the type of media for the job.
See Appendix A in your User's Guide for more information.
Media Width 12-inch/24-inch/ 36-inch/42-inch/50-inch/54-inch
Specifies the width of the media for the job.
Notes 1 and Notes 2
Use one or both of these fields to enter special information about the job.
The Notes 1 and Notes 2 fields each have a 32-character limit. These options are not available with Windows NT 4.0.
(Other) Gamma 1.0/1.2/1.4/1.6/ 1.8/2.0/2.2/2.4/2.6/2.8/3.0
Specifies the source gamma value for printing RGB images, objects, and text.
RGB Source must be Other. See Appendix A in your User's Guide for more information.
