HP Designjet 650c Printer - Monochrome Plots Are Shaded When Using AutoCAD

Issue:
When plotting a drawing with the front panel set to Color, the output is exactly what is expected. When changing the front panel mode to Mono, the drawing is plotted with each color line as a shade of black and not as 100% black. The front panel menu option for "palette" is set equal to "software."
AutoCAD's Plot function defines the printer's pen palette with a color RGB value for each of its 255 pens. When in Mono mode, the printer will generate a monochrome value (percentage of black) based on the RGB value for the color used. Thus, an object is only 100% black when black is the color that is directly assigned to the object.
Solution
See the following suggestions:
AutoCAD version 13 and 14 instructions
Option #1
Choose the HP Designjet 600 printer configuration
  1. Within HPCONFIG, choose the HP Designjet 600 printer configuration file (DNJET600.CFG) and add it as a new printer selection by using AutoCAD's CONFIG process.
      note:
It is recommended that the new configuration name be "Designjet 650c MONO" or "650c MONO" to distinguish this configuration from the 650c Color printer configuration.
  2. Once the addition is completed, select the proper printer from the Plot function by clicking the Device and Default button. The only reason to use HPCONFIG at this point is for changing special attributes.
Option #2
Within HPCONFIG set print colors to "All as Black"
  1. At the AutoCAD command prompt type HPCONFIG.
  2. Select by clicking All as Black.
  3. Click the save as button.
  4. Type in a filename and select by clicking OK.
  5. When ready to plot go to the device and default section, check under change device requirements to insure use of the filename that was typed in.
Option #3
Configure all colors used to AutoCAD pen number 7
  1. In AutoCAD's Plot function, select by clicking the Pen Assignments button.
  2. For each color used in your drawing, change the corresponding pen number to pen number 7.
For further information on configuration of AutoCAD's Plot function, refer to the AutoCAD reference material or an authorized AutoCAD Dealer.
AutoCAD 200x instructions
  1. In AutoCAD 200x, type plot in the command line and then select the Plot device tab.
  2. In the Plot Style Table (pen assignments) field, select monochrome.ctb from the list, then click OK.
On the printer
Configure a custom palette on the HP Designjet 650c printer
  note:
Please refer to the Using The Front Panel settings in the User'sGuide for information on changing printer's internal pen palettes. Select and print the Palette Demonstration plot from the Demo menu to see available pen colors.
Create and configure a custom palette on the printer by using the Pen Settings menu. Configure each of the 16 available pens with the proper color number and pen weight. Color number 1 on the printer is black, with color numbers 8 to 15 being a percent of black.
