HP Smart Tank Printers - 'E4' error (Paper Jam)

During a print job, your HP Smart Tank 670, 720, 750, 6000, 7000, or 7300 series printer stops feeding pages, an E4 displays on the control panel, and the Resume light blinks.

Perform the following tasks in the order given. Use the printer after each task to see if the issue is resolved.

Clear jammed paper from the printer

Paper jams can occur in multiple areas of the printer. If you cannot find the paper jam in one area, continue to the next area until the jam is located.

Clean the paper feed rollers using an automated tool

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the paper feed rollers and cause paper jams and paper-feed issues. Clean the rollers from the printer control panel.

  1. Turn off the printer.

  2. Remove the stack of paper from the input tray.

  3. Press and hold the Power button , press the Color Copy button three times and the Black Copy button seven times, and then release the Power button .

    The printer turns on and cleans the paper path rollers.

  4. Wait until the printer is idle and silent.

Clean the paper rollers in the input tray

Dust, paper fiber, and other debris might accumulate on the pickup roller and cause paper feed issues. Clean the paper rollers in the input tray.

Gather the following items:

  • A lint-free cloth or swab

  • Distilled, filtered, or bottled water (tap water might damage the printer)

  1. Turn off the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord and disconnect the USB cable.

  3. Pull out the input tray.

  5. Look inside the gap where the trays were and find the gray paper pick rollers.

  6. Dampen a long cotton swab with distilled water, and then squeeze out any excess water.

  7. Press the swab against the rollers, and then rotate them away from you with your fingers. Apply a moderate amount of pressure to remove dust or dirt buildup.

  8. Reinsert the output tray.

  10. Allow the rollers to dry for 10 to 15 minutes.

  11. Plug the power cord and connect the USB cable.

  12. Turn on the printer.

Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer errors or failures.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.

  3. Wait 60 seconds.

  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.

    Note:

    HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

  5. Turn on the printer to complete the reset.

Service the printer

Service or replace your HP product if the issue persists after completing all the preceding steps.
