HP LaserJet MFP M430, M431, M480, E42540, E47528 - Scan from the computer using HP Scan Twain

Learn how to scan with an HP Enterprise or HP Managed MFP using HP Scan Twain.

Overview

This document provides instructions on how to install and configure an HP Scan Twain software on a network for an HP Enterprise Multifunction Printer (MFP) running an HP FutureSmart firmware version 4 or newer to scan from computer.

TWAIN is an industry standard interface between a scan hardware and a software application. The HP Scan Twain is a free common desktop software that enables a user to scan files from a computer connected to a network. It includes an installation package containing the following contents:

  • HP Scan Twain driver,

  • HP Device Selection Tool, and

  • HP Scan software

Supported Operating Systems

HP Scan Twain software is compatible with the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows 10

  • Microsoft Windows 8.1

  • Microsoft Windows 8

  • Microsoft Windows 7

  • Microsoft Windows 2016

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2

Requirements

Before enabling HP Scan Twain, make sure the following requirements are met:

  • The computer supports any of the operating system listed in the Supported Operating Systems.

  • The computer and the HP Enterprise MFP are connected on the same network.

  • The HP Enterprise MFP is running HP FutureSmart firmware version 3.8 or newer.

Install, configure, and use HP Scan Twain

Follow these steps in the order presented to install and configure HP Scan Twain.

Applicable printers

This document applies to HP Enterprise and HP Managed printers running HP FutureSmart 5 or newer:

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M430, M431

  • HP Color LaserJet Enterprise MFP M480

  • HP LaserJet Managed MFP E42540

  • HP Color LaserJet Managed MFP E47528

Update the firmware

Before you begin, make sure the latest firmware version is installed. For instructions on how to download or upgrade the firmware, go to Update firmware using a USB flash drive or the Embedded Web Server.

Enable the Web Scan feature in the Embedded Web Server (EWS)

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to enable the Web Scan feature.

  1. In the address line of a web browser, type the printer IP address or host name and then press Enter to open the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

  2. Log in using administrator credentials.

  3. Enable the WebScan feature.

    1. Select the Networking tab.

    2. In the left pane, select Other Settings.

    3. Under Misc Settings in the Enabled Features section, select the WebScan or Secure WebScan check boxes.

      Note:

      When scanning data on the network using the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol (https) for secure transmission, enable Secure WebScan.

    4. Click Apply to save the setting.

  4. Enable the Remote User Auto Capture feature.

    1. Select the Security tab.

    2. In the left pane, select General Security.

    3. Under Web Scan Auto Capture Jobs, select the Enable Remote User Auto Capture check box.

    4. Click Apply to save the setting.

  5. Close the EWS.

Download the HP Scan Twain driver

Follow these steps to download the HP Scan Twain driver.

  1. Go to HP Support.

  2. Select Software and Drivers.

  3. Type the product name or number in the search box, select Find my product, and then select the product model from the list of search results.

  4. Select the operating system.

  5. Expand the Driver - Product Installation Software section.

  6. Select the HP Scan Twain driver option, select Download, and then save the file to the computer.

  7. Note the location where you saved file.

Install the HP Scan Twain package

After downloading the file, follow these steps to install HP Scan Twain.

  1. Double-click the HP ScanTwain .msi file.

  2. Click Next, accept the license agreement to continue with the installation, and then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the set up the process.

  3. On the Completed the HP Scan Twain Setup Wizard window, select the Run HP TWAIN Device Selection Tool checkbox to automatically run the installation and then click Finish.

    Note:

    To run the installation manually, clear the Run HP TWAIN Device Selection Tool check box and then click Finish.

    The HP TWAIN Device Selection Tool and the HP Scan TWAIN icons will display on your computer when the installation is completed.

Find and set up an HP MFP as the default scanner

Follow these steps to find and set up an HP Enterprise MFP as the default Twain scanning product on the network.

  1. Make sure the printer is connected to the network.

  2. Double-click HP TWAIN Device Selection Tool icon to open the software.

  3. Use one of the following methods to find the printer.

    Note:

    The Twain Scan driver must be installed in order to be discovered by the HP Scan Twain software.

    • Click Show all devices and wait for the software to discover the printer, OR

    • Type the IP address or host name of the printer in the search field and click Search.

  4. Select the printer from the left pane under the Select Device section.

  5. Click Apply, and then click OK to set the MFP as the default scanner.

  6. Click OK to confirm.

Scan using the HP Scan Twain software

Scan using one of the following methods with HP Scan Twain.

Scan and save an image using HP Scan

Use this method in a small business environment when the printer is nearby.

In this method, the scanning process is initiated by the software and the file is scanned directly to the software. It requires the Job Reservation feature to be disabled.

To scan with the Job Reservation feature disabled, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click HP Scan Twain to open the scan software.

  2. In the Scan Shortcuts section, select a file type to save the scanned file.

  3. Disable the Job Reservation feature.

    1. Under Job Reservation in the lower left corner, click the plus sign.

    1. In the Job Reservation Settings dialog box, clear the Enable Reservation check box, and then click OK.

  4. In the Scan Shortcut Settings, modify the scan settings, if required, and then click Scan. A preview of the scanned file displays.

  5. Modify the scanned image, if required, and then click Save.

  6. Note the location of the saved file or save the file to the Desktop.

    Note:

    The default file name of the scanned file is “Scan”.

  7. Click the scanned file to open and view the file.

Send a scan job using Job Reservation

Use this secure scanning method in an Enterprise environment when an MFP is used by multiple users.

In this method, first initiate the scan using the HP Scan Twain software and then complete the scan job from the printer control panel. It requires the Job Reservation feature to be enabled.

To scan with the Job Reservation feature enabled, follow these steps:

  1. Double-click HP Scan Twain to open the scan software.

  2. In the Scan Shortcuts section, select a file type to save the scanned file.

  3. In the Job Reservation field, make sure the option is set to Enabled.

  4. In the Scan Shortcut Settings, modify the scan settings, if required, and then click Scan.

  5. When the Preparing to scan dialog displays, take note of the scan Job Name.

  6. Complete the scan from the printer control panel.

    1. On the control panel, select Scan.

    2. Select Remote Scan Request.

    3. Select the scan Job Name you noted previously from the scan request queue.

      Note:

      The scan Job Name is the computer name where the scan was initiated.

    4. Select Send.

      After scanning is complete, the software displays a preview of the scanned file.

  7. Modify the scanned image, if required, and then click Save.

  8. Note the location of the saved file or save the file to the Desktop.

    Note:

    The default file name of the scanned file is “Scan”.

  9. Click the scanned file to open and view the file.
