HP printers - Use HP Smart app Shortcuts

Shortcuts (formerly Smart Tasks) is a feature of the HP Smart app. Use Shortcuts to create one-touch shortcuts to quickly complete your repetitive tasks, such as emailing, printing, and saving your scans.


As of March 2021, HP Smart Tasks has been renamed HP Shortcuts. Shortcuts is supported in many, but not all countries/regions. If the Shortcuts tile is not available in your HP Smart app, Shortcuts is not currently supported.

Install the HP Smart app

Install the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device.

  1. Place the printer near the Wi-Fi router if you are setting up a wireless connection.

  2. Make sure paper is loaded in the main tray, and then turn on the printer.

  3. Download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com (Android, Apple iOS, iPadOS), HP Smart - Microsoft Store (Windows 10), or HP Smart - Mac App Store (macOS).

    If you are prompted to sign in with Microsoft to use the app across devices, you can sign in or click No, thanks to continue.​


    Disconnect from a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection before downloading.

  4. If you are setting up HP Smart for the first time, you must create or sign in to an HP account to access all printer functions.

  5. If you are using an iOS or Android device, turn on Bluetooth to help locate the printer during the setup.

  6. Open the app to set up your printer.

    • If your printer is found, follow the instructions to complete the setup.

    • If your printer does not display or to add another printer to the app, click the plus sign , and then follow the instructions to add the printer.

Enable the Shortcuts tile in HP Smart

Add the Shortcuts tile to the home screen.

  1. Open the HP Smart app, and then select your printer on the home screen.

  2. Locate the Shortcuts tile on the home screen.

    If the tile is not listed, use the personalization settings to enable it.

    • Android, iOS: Tap Personalize Tiles, and then enable Shortcuts.

    • Windows 10: Click the Settings icon , click Personalize Tiles, and then enable Shortcuts.

    • Mac: Click Printer Settings, and then enable Shortcuts.

Create a Shortcut

Create a Shortcut to print, email, or save documents or photos to a connected cloud account.


Shortcut settings vary by printer, mobile device, or computer.

Run a Shortcut

Run a saved or preset shortcut from the HP Smart app, or set up shortcuts on the control panel for supported printers.

Enable scan to text in a Shortcut (OfficeJet Pro 9010, 9020, 9010e, 9020e)

Use the Email or Save Shortcuts to create text files of scanned documents, camera captures, and JPG images opened through the HP Smart app.

  1. From the Shortcuts tile, select the Save or Email Shortcut you want to run.

  2. Click the Settings icon , and then select Edit.

  3. Scroll down to the File Settings section, and then select one of the editable file types (PDF, .docx, .txt).

  4. Select the content language, and then click Save.


    After you enable scan to text with an HP OfficeJet Pro 9010, 9020, 9010e, or 9020e printer, you can use the feature with other HP printers set up in HP Smart.

  5. From the Shortcut Saved screen, click Start Shortcut to run the shortcut.

  6. Select the source of your image or document.

  7. Open an existing document or photo, or scan a document or photo using your camera or printer, depending on your device.

  8. Click Start [Shortcut name] to run the Shortcut to save or email the document as a searchable or editable text file.
