HP Notebook PCs - Swelling or Deformation of Notebook Battery

This document is for select consumer and business computers.
In order to protect your hardware from potential damage, HP recommends that customers experiencing battery swelling discontinue use of the notebook until the battery can be replaced. Customers should contact HP to understand what battery replacement options are available. To learn more about Lithium-ion batteries and factors that can accelerate battery swelling, go to HP Notebook PCs - Lithium-Ion Batteries.

Noticing a swollen battery

Customers may notice that their notebook battery may become somewhat deformed or swollen over time. In some cases, the battery swelling may be significant enough to impact other components of the system including the touchpad, keyboard and chassis.

Not a safety issue

A swollen battery does not present a safety issue. Battery swelling is the result of the generation of gases per the normal degradation of the battery cell over time. HP has worked closely with our battery cell suppliers and third-party industry experts to help minimize the potential for HP batteries to swell over time and to identify that swollen batteries are not a safety issue.

Discontinuing use

In order to protect your hardware from potential damage, HP recommends that customers experiencing battery swelling discontinue use of the notebook until the battery can be replaced. Customers should contact HP to understand what battery replacement options are available.

Replacing a swollen battery

If a battery is under warranty, HP will replace the battery per the terms and conditions of the HP Worldwide Limited Warranty or applicable HP Care Packs. For batteries no longer under warranty, contact HP to purchase a certified HP genuine replacement battery.

Minimizing battery swelling

There are multiple drivers that can accelerate battery swelling. To help mitigate battery swelling over time, HP has implemented Adaptive Battery Optimizer on select consumer and gaming notebooks and HP Battery Health Manager on select commercial notebooks.

HP Adaptive Battery Optimizer (consumer notebooks)

HP OMEN / HP Spectre / HP Pavilion / HP ENVY
Available on select gaming notebooks since 2019 and select consumer notebooks starting in 2020, HP Adaptive Battery Optimizer technology can help mitigate those factors that can accelerate battery swelling. To learn more about enabling HP Adaptive Battery Optimizer on your HP consumer notebook, go to Introducing Adaptive Battery Optimizer, Designed to Prolong Battery Lifespan.

HP Battery Health Manager (commercial notebooks)

HP ProBook / HP EliteBook
Available on select commercial notebooks from 2016-2021, HP Battery Health Manager provides business customers an easy-to-manage solution to help mitigate factors that can accelerate battery swelling in their install base. To learn more about HP Battery Health Manager, go to HP Business Notebook PCs - HP Battery Health Manager.
