HP Enterprise MFP, HP LaserJet Pro MFP - Configure eSCL Settings

This document provides information about the eSCL protocol and how to enable it on HP printers in order to use Apple's AirScan capability with Image Capture.
To use Apple’s AirScan, the HP printer must be configured to meet Apple’s new eSCL protocol needed to facilitate scanning over an AirPrint connection. This protocol is required by Apple for AirPrint-capable printers that have a scanner.
HP has recently added this capability to HP LaserJet Pro MFP, HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP, HP Officejet Enterprise MFP, and HP PageWide MFP models.
To enable the printer to work with AirScan when scanning using the latest versions of OS X or iOS devices, follow these steps:
  note:
When eSCL is enabled, the MFP will advertise itself using mDNS. Originally created by HP, this protocol consists of XML over HTTP which means the scanning is done through an executable called the AirScanScanner.
  1. Open the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS).
    • Open a Web browser, and in the address field, type the printer IP address exactly as it appears on the Configuration Page and then press Enter. The Embedded Web Server (EWS) opens.
  2. Select the Networking tab.
  3. Select either Advanced or Other Settings from the left menu pane (depending on your printer model).
  4. Select either the eSCL, Secure eSCL, or Secure WebScan option (depending on the printer model and firmware version).
  5. Select Apply and then select OK.
To use AirScan, open Image Capture (/System/Library/Image Capture/Devices/AirScanScanner.app).
