HP SlateBook PCs - Changing Languages (Android 4.2/Jelly Bean)

This document applies to HP notebook computers with Android 4.2/Jelly Bean operating system.
Change the display language setting so that the Android operating system displays notifications, menus, and other system text in your primary language. Changing the display language also changes the layout of the on-screen keyboard, which features the default symbol and character layout for the selected language. The physical keyboard layout must be changed separately.
This document provides information on how to change your notebook's display language and on-screen keyboard input language, and how to change the physical keyboard layout setting for writing in a different language.
Changing the Android system language setting and on-screen keyboard layout
Use the steps in this section to change the display language settings on your notebook.
  1. On the Home screen, click or touch the All apps icon, and then click or touch the Settings icon.
  2. In the Personal section, click or touch Language & input.

  3. Click or touch Language.

  4. Select your preferred language from the list.
      note:
    If your preferred language does not appear in the list, download the language from the Google Play Store (in English).
  5. Click or touch OK to confirm the language change. The language setting is changed for all accounts stored on the notebook.

    This setting changes the layout of the on-screen keyboard to the default layout for the selected language. The layout of the physical keyboard must be changed separately. See Changing the physical keyboard layout for instructions.
    The Android operating system displays notifications, menus, and other system text in the selected language. The on-screen keyboard features the default layout for the selected language.
Changing language settings when you cannot understand the current language
If your notebook was accidentally or intentionally set to a different language that you are unable to read, you can use icons to locate the language setting and change it back to a language you can read. Use the steps in this section to change languages using visual cues in place of words:
  1. On the Home screen, click or touch the All apps icon, and then click or touch the Settings icon.
  2. Scroll down on the list and click or touch the icon.
  3. Click or touch the first selection at the top of the screen to display a list of available languages.

  4. Select your preferred language from the list.
      note:
    If your preferred language does not appear in the list, download the language from the Google Play Store (in English).
  5. A confirmation window appears. Click or touch the button on the right to confirm the language change. The language setting is changed for all accounts stored on the notebook.

Changing the physical keyboard layout setting
Use the steps in this section to change your notebook's physical keyboard settings to fit different language or input methods.
  1. On the Home screen, click or touch the All apps icon, and then click or touch the Settings icon.
  2. In the Personal section, click or touch Language & input.

  3. In the Physical keyboard section, click or touch the current keyboard setting (for example, HP Keyboard: English (US) - Android keyboard).

  4. Click or touch Set up keyboard layouts.

  5. Place a check mark next to the keyboard layout you would like to use, and remove check marks from any layouts you do not want to use. Choosing multiple keyboard layouts allows you to quickly switch between the layouts, if desired.
      note:
    The on-screen keyboard layout is not affected by this setting.
    When pressed, the keys on the physical keyboard type letters and symbols based on the keyboard layout you selected. If you selected more than one keyboard layout, press the ctrl + spacebar keys to switch between layouts.
