HP Printers and All-in-Ones - The Product Does Not Function Correctly When Reinstalling with a USB Cable and After Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7

Issue
After you install the HP product in Windows Vista and then upgrade the computer to Windows 7, HP Solution Center no longer detects the HP product. The HP product's ink levels, network settings, error messages, and the Scan to option do not display on the computer (All-in-One products only).
  note:
Some of the following solutions require you to restart the computer. Consider bookmarking this page on your Web browser, so that you can reference it after restarting the computer.
Solution
Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve this issue.
Step One: Uninstall the HP software
Use one of the following methods to uninstall the HP software.
  1. Disconnect the USB cable from the product, and then from the computer.
  2. Click the Windows icon (), and then in the Search programs and files box type uninstall, and then click Uninstall a program.
  3. In the list of installed programs, right-click the HP product, and then click Uninstall. If Windows 7 prompts you, click Yes to Uninstall all HP products associated with this device.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall.
      note:
If asked to remove shared files, click No. If you delete the shared files, programs that use the shared files might not work correctly.
  5. Restart the computer.
Step two: Download and install a software patch
Follow these steps to install a HP Solution Center software patch. This patch fixes some product communication issues that exist after upgrading Windows Vista to Windows 7.
  1. Click here to download the software patch. A File Download window opens.
  2. Choose one of the following options to download the patch to the computer.
    • If you want to install the patch on the computer immediately, click Run.
    • If you want to install the patch at a later time, click Save, select a destination on the computer for the file to save, and then click Save. When the download is complete, click the downloaded file.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
  4. When you are prompted to restart your computer, click Restart to complete the installation.
Step three: Install the HP software
Use one of the following methods to install the software for the HP product.
Don’t worry if you don’t have the product CD! You can download the most current software available for your product from the HP Web site at no cost. The following information might help you decide which installation method to use:
CD
Download
For a new product:
CD installation is a quick and easy method.
If you do not have a CD, you can download the software you need.
For an older product:
CD installation might not work if you are installing the product on a computer running a newer operating system that released AFTER the HP product released.
For example, Windows 7 released in 2009. If HP manufactured your product prior to that year, the CD that came with the product might not work correctly on a computer running Windows 7.
Downloading the software provides the best results for your older product. Even though it takes more time than using the CD, downloading the latest software can help you avoid installation issues.
Downloading is the recommended method if your computer operating system released after the HP product released.
About the software:
The software on the CD is current to the date of the product release.
The software you can download from the HP Web site is most current software available for your product. HP often updates software and drivers AFTER the product and CD release to the market.
Method one: Download and install the software from the HP website
Follow these steps to download the software, and then install it.
  1. Turn on the printer.
  2. If your printer is connected to the computer with a USB cable, disconnect the cable from the printer.
  3. If prompted, select a method to identify your printer model, and then follow the on-screen instructions to go to the download page.
  4. Click Download next to the full feature driver (recommended), or click Basic Drivers for other driver options.
During the installation, you select what type of installation you want. The installation type names vary depending on your product. The following information might help you decide which installation type to use.
Recommended type
Custom type
Recommended, Full, or Easy
Custom, Express, or Advanced
For full use of all your product features: This installation provides full product functionality. HP also includes valuable software to help you get the most out of your product.
This type of installation works for most users.
A custom type of installation might be available for your product. This installation allows you to install the minimum software required or the preferred software. Use this type of installation only if you have one of the following reasons:
  • The computer is low on hard disk space.
  • You attempted a recommended type of installation and received errors. (If errors occur during the recommended installation, fix them before trying a custom installation.)
The Recommended type of installation allows you to take advantage of all your product features.
Follow these steps to install the software with the product CD.
  1. Insert the product CD into the CD drive of the computer, and then wait a few seconds for the software installer to open.
If the installer does not start automatically, click the Windows icon (), click Computer, and then double-click the CD drive.
      note:
If the User Account Control screen opens, click Allow to continue.
  2. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the software.
IMPORTANT: The installer might ask if you want to check online for the latest installation updates for your product. For the best installation results, HP recommends that you click “Yes” to let the installer check for updates and download them for you.
