HP Designjet Z3100 Photo Printer Series - Gloss Enhancer Feature

The printer comes with a “transparent” ink that is used to unify the glossiness of the media. This ink is called HP Gloss Enhancer and is activated from the driver.
In the driver, when you select a glossy or semi-gloss paper, and then you access Custom Options, you have access to the Gloss Enhancer menu.
In this menu there are three options:
  • Off - Do not apply Gloss Enhancer
  • Whole Page (default) - Gloss enhancer is used all around the page
  • Economode - the gloss enhancer is turned off in areas that are pure white (ie RGB=255,255,255). This way you keep the reflectiveness of the substrate coating of the media used. If the color is not pure white (ie RGB=254,254,254) the gloss enhancer will be applied.
Economode is recommended when the glossiness of the papers without any ink is already very close to the glossiness of the same paper with ink and with gloss enhancer. Also, it can be used in order to save gloss enhancer ink in situations where the user might have layouts of multiple images where there is a lot of white in between and therefore is acceptable to have a lower gloss level.
In images where there’s no pure white, using gloss enhancer within the image will be the same as in the “Whole page” mode.
However, if you still want to use the economode with images that have pure white we propose the following workaround: change areas in the image that are white to very very light gray (from RGB=255,255,255 to RGB=254,254,254):
From Adobe Photoshop select color range, sampled colors and then set the fuzziness to 0 and sample for 255,255,255 and make a quick mask. This will make a mask that surrounds everything that is pure white. Then go in with a paint bucket and change all of these areas to 254,254,254. This allows the user to use economode and still get gloss enhancer on pure white areas.
