HP Notebook PCs - Change Display Settings In Vista

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows Vista.
To personalize your PC, Windows Vista allows you to customize almost any screen element.

Change the size and resolution of the desktop

The size and the shape of the desktop can be adjusted to your personal preferences. During a normal Vista installation, the program tests the graphics card and displays the optimal size and resolution.
To change the display settings, follow the procedure below:
  1. Right-click on the desktop background, and select Personalize.
  2. Select Display Settings to open the Display Settings window.
  3. To change the screen area size, click the slide under Resolution. Drag the slide to the right and left to change the size and proportion of the screen area.
  4. To change the number of colors, select the desired quality from the drop-down menu under Colors.
When using more colors, the pictures and images will appear more realistic; however, more display memory is used and the display refresh time is slower.
  5. If the notebook PC is connected to multiple monitors, you can either display the same information on both monitors, or different information on each monitor.
    • Highlight the image of the monitor you want to designate as the main monitor and mark the check box at the This is my main monitor option.
    • If you want different information on each monitor, highlight the image of the secondary monitor and mark the check box at the Extend the desktop onto this monitor option.
    • If the Windows desktop is placed on the secondary monitor, when the monitor is disconnected the desktop is not visible. Leave the desktop image on the built-in LCD monitor.
  6. After you have made the desired adjustments, click OK to save the settings and close the Display Properties window.

Change the desktop background

You can change the background image on the desktop by adding a wallpaper (a picture or image) to the screen.
To change the pattern or wallpaper on the screen, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click on the desktop background, and select Personalize.
  2. Select Desktop Background to open the settings window.
  3. To change the desktop image, select one of the standard backgrounds, or click Browse and navigate to some picture you have stored on the PC.
To use a personal picture as a background, save the picture in a file format with one of the following extensions: .bmp, .gif, .jpg, .DIB, .png.
  4. Select the position for displaying the image on the desktop.
    • Stretch a graphic until it fills the entire screen or tile a graphic across the screen.
    • Change wallpaper to a single graphic that appears only in the center of the screen.
    • Repeat a small image multiple times until the entire screen is filled with the image.
  5. After you have made the desired adjustments, click OK to save the settings and close the Display Properties window.

Change the screen saver

Windows has a number of screen savers. Screen savers help to prevent an image from permanently "burning" into the display. The PC can be set to automatically lock when the screen saver is activated. To clear a screen saver after it has been activated and resume operation, move the mouse or press any key.
To change the screen saver, follow these steps.
  1. Right-click on the desktop background, and select Personalize.
  2. Select Screen Saver to open the settings window.
  3. In the Screen Saver pull-down menu, select the screen saver to be used.
  4. Click Settings to modify the settings particular to the selected screen saver.
  5. Click Preview to see how the screen saver will appear on the computer screen. The preview will end and return to the Display Properties panel in a few seconds.
  6. To specify when to activate the screen saver, enter a number of minutes in the Wait box. Either enter a specific number or use the arrows to increase or decrease the wait time.
  7. To automatically lock the computer when the screen saver is activated, select the On resume, display logon screen option.
  8. After you have made the desired adjustments, click OK to save the settings and close the Display Properties window.
