HP Deskjet Printer - Using the Auto-On and Auto-Off Feature

Introduction
This document provides information on the Auto-on and Auto-off feature of the HP Deskjet 5100, 5600, 5400, 5700, 5900, 6500, 6600 and 6800 printer series.
Auto-on Feature
The printer automatically turns on when you print a file. Auto-on is the default feature setting of the printer.
Auto-off Feature
The Auto-off feature places the printer in a low-power, energy-efficient mode after it has been idle for 30 minutes. Follow the steps below to enable the Auto-off feature.
Enabling the Auto-off feature (Windows System)
HP Deskjet 5100, 5600 and 5700 Printer Series
The Auto-off feature can be accessed either through the Printer Assistant or the Toolbox, depending on how the printer was installed on the computer.
  note:
Users who installed the printer software using the Add Printer process will not have access to the Printer Assistant, and the Toolbox will display only a single tab (Device Services). These users cannot enable the Auto-off feature.
  1. Does the Printer Assistant icon appear on your desktop?

      note:
    HP Deskjet 5700 Printer Series do not contain the Printer Assistant.
  2. Accessing Auto-off from the Printer Assistant
    1. Open the Printer assistant.

    2. Click Utilities.
    3. Click Printer Maintenance.
    4. Click Configure Printer.
    5. Click the Configure button. The HP Deskjet Toolbox will appear.
    6. Select the Configuration tab.

    7. Select Activate the Hardware Auto-off feature to turn on the feature.
      De-select Activate the Hardware Auto-off feature to turn off the feature.
    8. Click Apply.
  3. Accessing Auto-off from Printer Properties
    1. Follow one of these paths depending on the software program you are using:
      • Click File, Print, then select Properties.
      • Click File, Print Setup, then select Properties.
      • Click File, Print, Setup, then select Properties.
    2. Click the Services tab.
    3. Click the HP Toolbox button. The HP Deskjet Toolbox will appear.
    4. Select the Configuration tab (see Figure 3).
    5. Select Activate the Hardware Auto-off feature to turn on the feature.
      De-select Activate the Hardware Auto-off feature to turn off the feature.
    6. Click Apply.
HP Deskjet 5850 and 6840 Printer Series
Hewlett-Packard has improved the design processes of the HP Deskjet 5800 and 6840 series printers to minimize the negative impact of the office environment. The energy consumption is included on those printers specifications.
  warning:
See the printer Reference Guide for energy consumption specifications.
  note:
Energy consumption is in off-mode: when the printer is off, an amount of energy is still being consumed. Energy consumption can be prevented by turning the printer power off, then disconnecting the end of the printer power cord from the electrical source.
HP Deskjet 6520, 6540, and 6620 Printer Series
The Auto-off feature default setting is disabled.
  note:
The printer Toolbox shows only a single tab (Device Services) if the printer software has been installed using the Add Printer process. These users cannot enable the Auto-off feature.
Follow these steps to enable the Auto-off feature:
  1. Open the printer Toolbox.
  2. Select the Configuration tab.
  3. Select Activate the Hardware Auto-off feature to turn on the feature.
    De-select Activate the Hardware Auto-off feature to turn off the feature.

  4. Click Apply.
  note:
The Deskjet 6520, 6540, and 6620 series printers do not have the Auto-on feature. Therefore, if the printer goes into an Auto-off condition, it is needed to manually turn on the printer before sending a print job.
HP Deskjet 5940 and 5440 Printer Series
  1. Click Start, click Settings, and then click Printers.
      note:
    For Windows XP, click Start, click Settings, and then click Printers and Faxes.
    A list that includes the printers installed on the computer will appear.
  2. Highlight the printer name, and then right-click to display a list of options.
  3. Click Properties.
    The Printer Properties dialog box will appear.
  4. Click the Device Settings tab.
  5. Select Activate the Hardware Auto-off feature to turn on the feature.
    De-select Activate the Hardware Auto-off feature to turn off the feature.
  6. Click Apply.
  note:
The Deskjet 5920 and 5940 series printers do not have the Auto-on feature. Therefore, if the printer goes into an Auto-off condition, it is needed to manually turn on the printer before sending a print job.
