The latest version of HP Battery Health Manager is now available.

Description

The latest version includes updated settings and new features designed to optimize battery health by minimizing the notebook battery’s exposure to factors that can accelerate the natural degradation and chemical aging of the battery over time. HP Battery Health Manager (BHM) is a BIOS-level setting found in most HP Business Notebooks, Mobile Workstations, and Mobile Thin Clients.

In addition to a number of general updates and improvements, the latest version of HP Battery Health Manager now features three (3) setting options designed to target different user profiles based on how a customer intends to use and charge their device.

The Three Setting Options for HP Battery Health Manager are:

  • Let HP Manage My Battery Health – This setting balances battery run-time and battery health and is ideal for users who want to maximize battery runtime while also protecting their battery's health.

  • Maximize Battery Health Management - This setting maximizes the long-term health of the battery by limiting its maximum charge capacity to 80% of the design charge capacity and is ideal for users who primarily keep their notebook connected to AC power.

  • Minimize Battery Health Management - This setting disables select features in Battery Health Manager designed to manage the long-term health of the battery while allowing the battery to charge to its available full charge capacity. This setting is ideal for users who primarily use their notebook on battery power and want to maximize device runtime between charges.

Once a setting is selected, HP Battery Health Manager will utilize a select set of algorithms to help optimize battery health over the life of the battery. Please note that these settings can be changed at any time.

Battery Calibration

When you select Minimize Battery Health Management, the battery should be fully discharged (to the point the device will shut down) and recharged to 100%. Allowing the battery to fully discharge recalibrates the battery firmware and enables the device to report the updated charge capacity more accurately (battery diagnostics / system tray). HP Battery Health Manager on Older Platforms

The latest version of HP Battery Health Manager is now available on select HP Business Notebooks, Mobile Workstations, and Mobile Thin Clients starting from series G7 onward.

For HP Business Notebooks, Mobile Workstations, and Mobile Thin Clients released prior to G7, please update your BIOS to download the latest version of BHM that is available for your device.

HP Intelligent Charging

In addition to HP Battery Health Manager, HP has also updated HP Intelligent Charging to provide customers with a more flexible and intelligent charging experience.

HP Intelligent Charging provides additional protection against accelerated battery degradation by constantly monitoring the battery and detecting when the battery has been exposed to a high state-of-charge for a specified period of time.

Install HP Battery Health Manager

To download the BIOS update containing the latest version of BHM that is available for your device, please visit https://support.hp.com/drivers/laptops. From this page, users can enter their serial number, product number or product name to search for their product and download and install the latest available BIOS.

Depending on the version available for your device and the setting you select, HP Battery Health Manager will use a proprietary set of algorithms to optimize battery health during the life of the battery. New commercial notebooks come equipped with HP Battery Health Manager set to Let HP Manage My Battery Health as the default. This setting reduces charge capacity over time to optimize battery health and mitigate factors that can accelerate battery degradation. As a result of this reduction, battery run time decreases over time as available charge capacity is reduced. HP may, at any time, update HP Battery Health Manager to improve available settings, functionality, and performance. Refurbished products might have customized default settings to optimize user experience. For new batteries, actual battery Watt-hours (Wh) may differ from the design capacity and may have a full charge capacity that differs by up to 10%, which is typical for lithium-ion batteries. Battery capacity naturally decreases over time and with use, depending on several factors such as battery health management settings, shelf life, temperature, environment, loaded apps, features, system configuration, and power settings.
