HP Tablets - Setting up Your HP Tablet (Android KitKat, Jelly Bean)

This document applies to HP and Compaq tablets with Android 4.4/KitKat and 4.2/Jelly Bean operating systems.
This document provides information about setting up your HP tablet for the first time, setting up the Internet connection, and adding your owner account.
  note:
Depending on the version of Android installed on your tablet, some of the images in this document may not match your tablet exactly.
Setting up your HP tablet for the first time
Complete the following steps to set up the tablet:
  1. Unpack the box and remove any packaging material from the tablet and power supply.
  2. Connect the charging cable to the tablet.
  3. Connect the power adapter to a power outlet.
  4. Remove the protective film from the screen.
  5. The power button is located on the back of the tablet, on the top right side. To turn on the tablet, press and hold the power button until the HP logo appears on the screen.
After turning on the tablet, a Welcome screen displays. Continue using the steps in this document to complete the setup process.
Step 1: Selecting a preferred language on your HP tablet
Select your preferred language on the welcome screen.
  1. Swipe up or down on the touchscreen to scroll through the language menu until your preferred language is highlighted.

      note:
If your preferred language does not appear in the list, you can install the language after completing setup. Search for the language in the Google Play Store (in English), download the language, and then follow the steps in the HP support document Changing Languages to begin using the language.
  2. Tap Start or the forward arrow to proceed to the next screen.
Step 2: Setting up a Wi-Fi connection on your HP tablet
Connecting to the Internet during the initial setup is optional, however if you choose not to set up a Wi-Fi connection, the tablet is limited in functionality until you establish a connection. Without Internet, you cannot sign in using a Google Account, and cannot update software or download apps.
If your wireless router requires that you enter a MAC address to connect, use a different Wi-Fi network, or skip connecting to Wi-Fi for the initial setup. Follow the steps for finding your MAC address in the HP support document Connecting to a Wireless Network.
To skip past the Select Wi-Fi page, tap Skip, and then tap Skip anyway. Follow the on-screen instructions to continue setting up the tablet.
Use the following steps to connect to a Wi-Fi network during the initial setup process:
  note:
Some Wi-Fi networks (in hotel rooms, for example) feature an online sign-in page that requires you to access the Internet in order to sign in. When connecting to Wi-Fi for the first time (during the setup process), do not use a Wi-Fi network that features an online sign-in page.
  1. On the Select Wi-Fi screen, tap your Wi-Fi network in the list of available networks.
      note:
If you are trying to connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network during the setup process, and the tablet does not discover or connect to the network, temporarily unhide the network until setup is complete.

  2. If a password is required, enter your password, and then tap Connect. Continue to the next step to set up an account.
Step 3: Setting up an account on your HP tablet
When you sign in using your primary Google Account email address and password, you are automatically signed in to all the Google sites and services associated with that account (for example, Gmail and Google Play). The first account added to the tablet is the owner account, and includes special permissions (for example, the ability to delete other user accounts stored on the tablet, and the ability to reset the tablet). After adding an account during the initial setup, up to seven (7) additional user accounts can be added to the tablet. See the HP support document Creating and Using Accounts for more information.
Use the steps in one of the following sections to set up an account on your tablet with an existing Google Account, with a new Google Account, or without using a Google Account:
Step 4: Completing setup and registering your product on your HP tablet
When you reach the Setup complete screen, tap Finish. A product registration page appears. Read and agree to HP's license terms, and then follow the on-screen instructions to register your tablet, or bypass the registration by tapping Skip Registration.
