HP PCs - Watching Movies with Netflix (Windows 8)

This document applies to HP computers with Windows 8 that came with the Netflix app preinstalled.

Netflix is a subscription service that allows you to watch streaming movies and TV episodes over the Internet. The Netflix app comes preinstalled on select HP Windows 8 computers. Connect the Netflix Windows 8 app to your existing membership account, or set up a new account, and begin watching movies and TV episodes on your computer.

Use the steps in this document to set up and begin using the Netflix app.

Netflix streaming is not available in all regions, and the available content varies by location. For a full list of countries where Netflix streaming is currently available, refer to the "Where is Netflix available?" section of How Does Watch Instantly Work? (in English) from Netflix Support.

Setting up the Netflix Windows 8 app

Follow the steps in this section to connect your Netflix app to an existing account, or create a new account to use with the app.

On the Windows 8 Start screen, in the HP apps section, click the Netflix tile.

If you already have a Netflix membership, click Member sign in. Enter the email address and password for your Netflix account, and then click Sign in. Continue to Using the Windows 8 Netflix app.

If you do not have an existing Netflix membership, continue following the steps in this section.
In the email and password fields, enter the email address you want to use for your new Netflix account, and create a password for the account. Click Continue.

Ensure that the email address was entered correctly, and then click Yes to confirm.
Follow the on-screen instructions to create your new Netflix account.

Using the Netflix Windows 8 app

Navigating the Netflix app

Use this section to learn more about browsing and searching for titles in the Netflix app.

Browse titles: Click the down arrow to expand the Netflix browsing menu, which allows you to browse titles by genre, Netflix recommendations, and more.

Search for a specific title: Press the Windows + C keys to display the charms bar. Click Search, and then start typing your search term in the Search field.

View more information about a title: Click on a title's thumbnail image to view a detailed information page for that movie or TV show, including plot summary, release year, content rating, cast information, genre, and more.

Playing a movie or TV show

Click on a movie or TV show, and then click the play

button at the center of the graphic to begin playing. During playback, move your mouse pointer to display other options:

Pause/resume: Click the pause button, located at the left end of the progress bar, to pause the program. Click the play button to resume playback.
Adjust the volume: Click the speaker icon in the bottom left corner to display a volume slider and mute button.

Skip forward or back: Move your mouse pointer to the bottom of the screen, and click a location along the progress bar to skip forward or backward in the program you are watching. You can also click and drag the red circle along the progress bar to the desired location.

Turn on subtitles or alternate audio (not available for all titles): Click Languages to display audio and subtitle options for the program you are currently watching. These options can vary.

Exit playback: To exit playback and return to the previous screen, move your mouse pointer to the upper left corner of the screen and click the back button.

Signing out of the Netflix app

You do not need to sign out of the Netflix app unless you are using a public computer, or a shared computer on which you do not want to share access to your Netflix account. If you do not sign out at the end of a session, you will not need to enter your email address and password the next time you open the Netflix app.

Use the following steps to sign out of your Netflix account in the Windows 8 app:

Press the Windows + C keys to display the charms bar.
Click the Settings charm.
In the Settings menu, click Sign out.

Do I need to pay to use the Netflix app?

There is no cost to install or use the Netflix Windows 8 app; however, there is a monthly charge for the Netflix membership subscription service. Refer to the Netflix Web site (in English) for current subscription rates.

How many devices can I use with one Netflix account?

Device allowances can vary depending on your Netflix membership plan. Refer to Simultaneous Streams on Your Netflix Account (in English), or read the full Terms of Use (in English) from Netflix.

If you are getting the error message Your Netflix account is in use on another device. Please stop playing on other devices to continue, even if you are not exceeding your account's device limit, try the troubleshooting steps in Your Account Is in Use on Multiple Devices (in English) from Netflix Support.

How do I update the Netflix app?

Install Netflix app updates from the Windows Store. See Update the Netflix App on Windows 8 (in English) from Netflix Support for more information.

The Netflix tile on my Start screen is displaying titles I recently watched. How do I make it stop?

With live tiles turned on, when you are signed in to Netflix, the Netflix Windows 8 app tile displays titles from your recently watched list. To turn off this function on the Netflix tile, right-click the tile. At the bottom of the screen, click Turn live tile off.

How do I fix the Netflix app error codes W8156 or W8158?

To fix the W8156 or W8158 error code in the Netflix app, run Windows Update and install any optional graphics driver updates. Refer to the HP support document Updating Drivers and Software with Windows Update for instructions.

If Windows Update did not fix the error, you may need to manually update your graphics driver. Go to the Driver and Download page for your HP computer to download and install the latest graphics driver.

If updating the graphics driver did not correct the error, visit the Netflix Help Center (in English) for troubleshooting suggestions.

How do I fix the Netflix app error code B33?

If an error message appears with the error code B33 when you try to use the Netflix app, make sure you are connected to the Internet. If your Internet connection is working properly and you still receive the error, uninstall and then reinstall the Netflix app using the steps in Netflix Windows 8 App Error B33 (in English) from Netflix Support.

When trying to view videos in the Netflix app, I get error messages about playing protected content. How do I fix the errors?
