HP Z420 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Front Panel IO Assembly

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the front panel IO assembly for the HP Z420 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The end user should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.
Tools required
Torx-15 screwdriver

The replacement part number will vary depending on the front panel IO assembly that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.
Summary of instructions
To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the front panel IO assembly, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select Front panel IO assembly from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
Front panel IO assembly removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the front audio, 1394, and front USB cables from the system board.
  3. Remove the cable tie from the front I/O and power switch cables.
  4. Remove the two Torx-15 screws that secure the assembly to the front of the chassis.
  5. Pull the assembly out of the opening in the chassis.
  6. Guide the assembly cables through the opening in the front of the chassis and remove the assembly.
Front panel IO assembly replacement
  1. Guide the assembly cables through the openings on the front of the chassis and bottom of the drive cage.
  2. Place the assembly into the opening in the chassis.
  3. Replace the two Torx-15 screws that secure the assembly to the front of the chassis.
  4. Connect the USB, 1394, and front audio cables to the system board.
  5. Bundle the front I/O and power switch cables together with a cable tie.
