Blinking Lights on the HP Deskjet 1000 (J110a, J110c, J110d, J110e, and J110f) Printers

Introduction

The lights on the front of the product indicate the product status. These lights can be on, off, or blinking (flashing), depending on the status of the product. The Power light can blink in distinct patterns to indicate the product status or potential error conditions.

This document describes the light patterns on your product as blinking or flashing lights. In this document, "flashing" means the same as "blinking."

note:

There might be more than one solution for some blinking lights patterns. After you find the pattern that matches your blinking lights pattern, try each solution to resolve the issue.

Blinking lights

The following sections describe the most common combinations of blinking lights, followed by solutions for each combination. Find the blinking lights pattern you are experiencing, and then follow the steps to resolve the issue.

Issue: Power light off

Solution for Power light off

The Power light is off and does not blink.

Press the Power button (

) to turn on the product.

Solutions for Power light on

The Power light is on and does not blink.

The product might be in an error state, even when the Power light is on and does not blink. If you are unable to print and the Power light is on, try the following solutions.

You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Install both cartridges

Make sure that both cartridges are installed.

Open the cartridge door, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

Check both cartridges. If a cartridge is missing, replace it. If a cartridge is not installed securely, firmly press the cartridge into the carriage until it snaps into place.
Close the cartridge access door.

Solution two: Check the ink levels, and then replace low or empty cartridges

One or both of the cartridges are moderately low on ink. If print quality becomes unacceptable, follow these steps to identify the cartridge that is low on ink, and then replace the cartridge.

Step one: Check the ink levels

Open the HP product software:
- Windows XP: Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product ().
- Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product ().
note:

You can also open the HP product software from your computer desktop: double-click the icon for your HP product ().

The product software opens.
Click Estimated Ink Levels. A graphic that represents the estimated ink levels for your product displays.

Step two: Replace the cartridge that is low on ink

Open the cartridge door, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

Press down lightly on the cartridge that you want to replace to release it, and then pull it toward you out of its slot.

Remove the new cartridge from its package, and then use the pink pull tab to remove the protective tape.

Slide the new cartridge into its slot until it snaps firmly into place.

- The tri-color cartridge () goes in the slot on the left
- The black cartridge () goes in the slot on the right
Repeat these steps for the other cartridge, if necessary.
Close the cartridge access door.

Solution three: Use only genuine HP cartridges

One or both of the cartridges is not a genuine HP cartridge or is incompatible with the product. Follow these steps to install a genuine HP cartridge.

Visit HP SureSupply to check ink or toner cartridge compatibility or purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies.

Go to HP SureSupply.
If necessary, select your country/region.
Follow the on-screen instructions to order new supplies or check cartridge compatibility with your printer.

You can also purchase genuine HP cartridges and supplies from other retailers.

Open the cartridge door, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

Press down lightly on the cartridge that you want to replace to release it, and then pull it toward you out of its slot.

Remove the new, genuine HP cartridge from its package, and then use the pink pull tab to remove the protective tape.

Repeat these steps for the other cartridge, if necessary.
Close the cartridge access door.

Solution four: Print in single cartridge mode

You can print in single cartridge mode if only one cartridge is installed.

If both cartridges are installed, follow these steps to remove the plastic protective tape from the cartridge.

Open the cartridge door, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

Press down lightly on the cartridge that you want to check to release it, and then pull it toward you out of its slot.

Remove any plastic tape from the cartridge. If the pink pull tab is available, use the pull tab to remove the tape.

Slide the cartridge into its slot until it snaps firmly into place.

Repeat these steps for the other cartridge, if necessary.
Close the cartridge access door.

Solution five: Align the product

If you installed a new cartridge, follow these steps to align the product.

Open the printer software.
- Windows 8:
  If you are not using the latest version of Windows 8, the information in these steps might not match. You can get the latest version from the Microsoft Store.
  Right-click the Start button () in the lower left corner of the screen, and then click Search.
  
  Type HP in the search box.
  
  Click your printer (). The printer software opens.
  note:
  
  You can also open the printer software from your computer desktop: double-click the icon for your printer ().
- Windows 7 or Windows Vista:
  
  Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer (). The printer software opens.

- Windows XP:
  
  Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your printer, and then click the icon for your printer (). The printer software opens.

Double-click Printer Actions, and then double-click Maintenance Tasks. The HP Toolbox opens.
Click the Device Services tab, and then click Align Ink Cartridges. The printer aligns the cartridges and then prints an alignment page.

The product is busy with a different task. Wait for the current task to finish before printing.

You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Load paper

The product is out of paper. Follow these steps to load paper.

If the product is not already on, press the Power button () to turn it on.
Lift the paper tray.

Lower the output tray, and then pull the tray extender out.

Slide the paper width guide to its outermost position.

Load unused, plain white, U.S. letter or A4 size paper in the tray with the short edge forward and the print side up.

Slide the paper width guide to the right until it stops at the edge of the paper but does not bend the paper.

Solution two: Open the output tray

Make sure that the output tray is open. You might need to press the Power button (

) to clear the error.

Solution four: Check the ink levels, and then replace low or empty cartridges

One or both of the cartridges are very low on ink. Follow these steps to identify the cartridge that is low on ink, and then replace the cartridge.

Step one: Check the ink levels

Open the HP product software:
- Windows XP: Click Start (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product ().
- Windows Vista or Windows 7: Click the Windows icon (), click All Programs, click HP, click the folder for your HP product, and then click the icon for your HP product ().

You can also open the HP product software from your computer desktop: double-click the icon for your HP product ().

The product software opens.
Click Estimated Ink Levels. A graphic that represents the estimated ink levels for your product displays.

Step two: Replace the cartridge that is low on ink

Open the cartridge door, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

Solution five: Resolve a paper jam

Follow these steps in the order presented to resolve the paper jam.

These steps are only basic instructions for clearing a paper jam. For more information on clearing a paper jam, click here (c02251295) (in English).

Step one: Remove any paper from the paper trays

Remove any paper from the input and the output tray.

caution:

Do not remove jammed paper at this stage. Trying to clear jammed paper from the front of the product can damage the print mechanism.

Step two: Clear the paper jam from the base of the product

Press the Power button () to turn off the product.
Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
Turn the product so that you can access its underside (base).
Press in the tabs on either side of the cleanout door to release it.

Pull the cleanout door away from the product to open it.

Gently remove any jammed paper from inside the product.
Reattach the cleanout door. Gently push the door forward until it snaps into place.
Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Step three: Clear the jam from inside the product

Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

warning:

You must unplug the power cord to allow you to move the carriage by hand and to reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of an electrical shock.
Gently remove any paper that is jammed in the product.
Close the cartridge access door.

Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
Reconnect the USB cable to the back of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Step four: Clear the jam from the front of the product

If you cannot remove the jam from the base or inside the product, carefully remove any jammed paper from the front of the product.

Solution six: Resolve a carriage jam

Follow these steps to resolve the carriage jam.

These steps are only basic instructions for resolving a carriage jam. For more information on resolving a carriage jam, click here (c02251802) (in English).

Step one: Remove jammed paper

Follow the steps in 'Solution four: Resolve a paper jam' to clear any paper jam.

Step two: Make sure that the carriage moves freely

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Open the cartridge access door. The carriage moves to the center of the product. Wait until the carriage is idle and silent before continuing.

Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.

warning:

You must unplug the power cord to allow you to move the carriage by hand and to reset the paper feed mechanism without the risk of an electrical shock.
Look inside the product to see where the carriage is stuck, and then check for any torn paper or other objects that might be restricting the carriage. You might need a flashlight to illuminate areas for proper viewing.

caution:

If the paper tears when you remove it from the rollers, check the rollers and wheels for torn pieces of paper that might remain inside the product. If pieces of paper remain in the product, more paper jams can occur.
Remove any loose paper or obstructions found.
Reach inside the product through the cartridge door, and then manually move the carriage.
Make sure that the carriage can move freely across the width of the product. Firmly push the carriage to the left side of the product, and then to the right side.
Close the cartridge access door.

Plug the power cord into the wall outlet or power strip.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
Try to print a self-test report.

Step three: Remove and reinstall the cartridges

Open the cartridge door, and then wait for the carriage to move to the center of the product.

Slide the cartridge back into its slot until it snaps firmly into place.

Step four: Plug the product into a wall outlet

Plug the product directly into a wall outlet to make sure that the power source functions correctly.

Step five: Perform a power reset

Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from back of the product.
Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet.
Wait at least 15 seconds.
Connect the power cord into wall outlet.
Connect the power cord to the back of the product.
If the product does not turn on by itself, press Power button () to turn it on.
Try to print.

Solution seven: Reset the product

Follow these steps to clear a fatal error.

Step one: Perform a reset

Without turning off the product, disconnect the power cord from the back of the product.
Wait 30 seconds, and then reconnect the power cord to the back of the product.
Press the Power button () to turn on the product.

Step two: Service the product

If you have completed all the solutions in this section and the issue is not resolved, continue to the 'Service the Product' section at the end of this document.

Service or replace your HP product if you completed all preceding steps.
