HP Compaq nc4010 Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP Compaq nc4010 Notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.
Tools required
  • Torx #8 (T8) screwdriver
  • Small, flat-bladed screwdriver or a flat-bladed alignment tool

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation* (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the Original Spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labelled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Keyboard removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Remove the T8-8 mm screw near the center of the base enclosure.
  3. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  4. Use a plastic flat-bladed tool or your finger to lift the top edge of the keyboard and slide the bottom edge toward the display.
  5. Lift the bottom edge and pull it back until the keyboard is resting on the top cover.
  6. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  7. Remove the keyboard ribbon cable from the ZIF connector.
  8. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar to unlock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Remove the pointing stick ribbon cable from the ZIF connector and remove the keyboard.
Keyboard replacement
  1. Place the keyboard right side up on the top cover.
  2. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the pointing stick ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
  4. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      note:
    Use care to prevent damaging the keyboard ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
  6. Lift the keyboard and move it toward the rear of the notebook.
  7. Toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the top cover and press the keyboard flat.
  8. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  9. Replace the T8-8 mm screw.
