HP Compaq nc4400 Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Button board

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the Button board for the HP Compaq nc4400 Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

Tools required

Small, Phillips-head (P0,P1) screwdrivers.
Small, flat-bladed screwdriver or a flat-bladed alignment tool.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the Button board that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

note:

If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Modified Spare number, the Modified Spare must be ordered as the replacement part. If your unit contains a part that is labeled with the Original Spare number, please order the Original Spare as the replacement part. In this case either the Original Spare or the Modified Spare may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

Button board removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the button board cable from the system board and un-route the cable from the top cover.
  3. Remove the 3 mm P0 Phillips-head screw that secures the button board to the top cover.
  4. Lift and remove the button board and cable.
  5. Disconnect the button board cable from the button board.
  6. Place the button board in a static dissipative bag.

Button board replacement

  1. Remove the button board from the static dissipative bag.
  2. Reconnect the button board cable to the button board.
  3. Place the button board into position on the top cover under the plastic tab and over the guide pin.
  4. Replace the 3 mm P0 Phillips-head screw that secures the button board to the top cover.
  5. Reconnect the button board cable to the system board and route the cable on the top cover.
