HP Designjet Printers - Paper Feed Issue when Printing from Tray Paper Loading or Instructions on How to Load Paper in Tray 1

Issue

No paper pick, a false out of paper message, paper jam and skewed print issues occur while printing from tray 1.

Solution

Complete the following step-by-step instructions to load the paper properly in tray 1:
  1. Pull or take the tray out of the printer.
  2. Remove the dust cover or protective tray.
The ideal position of the tray is shown in the following picture:
  3. Move both paper guides to the edge of the tray.
  4. Now load the media. Before you the load the media, see the user guide or manual to know the type, size and weight of media that is supported from tray 1.
Load media from the extreme right-hand corner and the printing side should be facing down.
Always load a stack of media of at least 15-20 sheets while printing from tray 1.
Never use tray 1 for printing on one or two sheets because this might cause media pick issues.
Always load a stack of paper of the same type, size and weight.
  5. Now push both the paper guides to the sides of the paper so that paper is not picked skewed.
  6. Make sure that the guides are right up to the sides of the media but not pushed too tightly against the sides hampering the movement of the paper.
  7. Expand the tray to load longer media. This tray can be expanded lengthwise to load the larger media.
Take out all the paper from the tray.
Locate the silver grey sliding button to unlock and expand the tray.
  8. After you have located the sliding button, you will find that the button in its locking position will be on the right-hand side.
  9. Slide the button to the left-hand side to unlock the tray.
  10. With the tray unlocked, you can expand the tray. To expand the tray, press and hold the grey button down (located in the middle of the tray, highlighted within the red box in the picture), and pull the tray outwards.
  11. After the tray is expanded, load larger media and close the paper guides as mentioned in steps 5 and 6.
The expanded tray can be reduced to its original size by following the steps from 7 to 10.

Cause

One of the reasons for this issue is improper loading of paper in the automatic tray or tray 1, and paper guides not set properly against the sides of the paper.
