HP Officejet J5700 Series All-in-One - 'Need alignment' or 'Alignment failed' Error Message Displays on the LCD

Issue
The LCD displays the error messages "Need alignment" or "Alignment failed." This error can be caused by various factors.
Solution
Read the sections below for solutions to alignment issues.
Incorrect type of paper is loaded in the input tray
  1. If you have colored paper loaded in the input tray when you align the print cartridges, the alignment fails. Load unused plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray, and then try the alignment again.
  2. If the alignment fails again, the sensor or print cartridge might be defective.
Protective tape is covering the print cartridges
  1. Check each print cartridge. The tape might have been removed from the copper-colored contacts, but still might cover the ink nozzles.
  2. If the tape is still covering the ink nozzles, carefully remove the tape from the print cartridges.
  3. Do not touch the ink nozzles or the copper-colored contacts.
      Figure : Protective tape
    1. Copper-colored contacts
    2. Plastic tape with pink pull tab (must be removed before installing)
    3. Ink nozzles under tape
  4. Reinsert the print cartridges and verify that they are fully inserted and locked in place.
Contacts on the print cartridge are not touching the contacts in the print carriage
  1. Remove and then reinsert the print cartridges.
  2. Verify that they are fully inserted and locked in place.
Align the newly installed print cartridges
  1. After inserting a new print cartridge, the printer will print an alignment sheet to ensure excellent quality
  2. Place the alignment page face down on the scanner glass and then press OK on the control panel.
  3. Recycle or discard the page.
  4. If the alignment page prints properly, showing green check marks on each line, but the alignment error persists, clear the message by pressing the Cancel button.
  5. If the alignment error persists and cannot be cleared, the print cartridge might be defective. If the print cartridge is defective, go to the next section.
Contact HP if print cartridge or sensor is defective
If the sensor or the print cartridge is defective, check the warranty information.
  • To find support and warranty information, go to the HP Web site at www.hp.com/support.
