HP Notebook PCs - Some Software Applications May Cause Windows to Startup or Operate Slowly

This document pertains to HP Notebook PCs with Windows 7 and Vista.
Some applications install components into the Windows Startup sequence causing Windows to startup or operate slowly. Some of these applications are poorly written, and others are designed to conflict with other applications or Windows operating system components. Perform one or more of the following procedures to identify and eliminate the applications that have a negative impact on the performance of the computer.

Remove malicious software using anti-virus software

Malicious software consists of viruses, trojans, worms, spyware and adware that have installed themselves on your computer without your knowledge. These types of software files are not easily removed like regular applications using Add or Remove Programs function.
See Related links for more information on viruses, spyware, and the antivirus software installed on your machine.

Use System Configuration to prevent programs from loading during startup

Remove unwanted startup applications

If Windows is operating slowly, do some diagnostics using the System Configuration utility (MSCONFIG) to identify and remove unwanted programs. Perform the following steps to startup Windows with the minimum required components enabled. Then identify and remove unwanted programs.
  1. Click Start.
  2. In the Search field, type: msconfig and when the option appears in the menu, press Enter.
  3. In the System Configuration window, click the Startup tab.
  4. Make a list of all the items checked as a startup item.
  5. Click the General tab and select Selective startup. Uncheck Load startup items.
  6. Click Apply and allow the computer to restart. Windows Vista will restart with only those programs it needs in order to function running in the background.
Restarting your computer means that you will lose your place in this help document. You may wish to print this document out before continuing.
When the computer restarts, test the normal computer applications to determine if the PC is operating faster and more efficiently.
  • If a needed application does not start, add a check in the box next to the software name and continue the diagnostics.
  • Research the applications that did not start, and make sure that they are for programs that you want to have on your computer. You may enable these programs at any time by checking their boxes in the Startup tab, as described above.
Below is a list of known HP tested applications that should not be removed from the Startup list on an HP Notebook PC. Any other applications may be removed to test performance by unchecking the box in front of the application's name.
  • hpcmpmgr
  • HPWuSchd2
  • cpqset
  • ctfmon
  • ccApp
If you are satisfied with the performance, no additional diagnostics are needed.

Remove rarely used applications

The performance of your notebook can be improved by removing unwanted and rarely used applications. Follow the steps below to uninstall unwanted software to free up disk space, and run standard disk utilities to improve the access speed to the hard drive.

  1. Click Start, enter uninstall in the search field and then select Uninstall a program from the list.
  2. Scroll through the programs and select the name of the unwanted program and then click Uninstall. Follow the uninstall instructions to remove the program.
After all unwanted programs are uninstalled, restart the computer and follow the steps below to perform maintenance on the hard drive.
  1. Click Start, click Computer and then right-click on the hard drive icon (usually (C:)).
  2. Select Properties from the drop down menu, and view information on drive usage on the General tab.
  3. Click the Tools tab and run these maintenance tools:
    • Error-checking, which examines the drive for corrupt files and bad sectors.
    • Defragmentation, which organizes the way in which your files and programs use the space on your hard drive more efficiently.
See Related links for more information on using these tools to improve the performance of your computer.

Reinstall the Windows operating system

As a last resort, after performing all the methods listed in this document and after reviewing the additional methods listed under the Related Support heading, you may decide to backup your data and reinstall Windows.
Personal data and software you have installed on the notebook will be lost during the OS reinstall. HP recommends that you make a backup copy of all personal data before beginning this process.
To do so, you will need the Recovery discs that you should have created shortly after receiving your notebook PC. See Related links for more information on creating and using Recovery discs using HP Recovery Manager.
