HP Printer Does not Print and Error Indicates Faulty Ink Cartridge

This document is for HP inkjet printers.
The printer does not print, and a cartridge light blinks or one of the following error messages displays.
  • Cartridge error
  • Cartridges in Wrong Slot
  • Cartridge Missing
  • Cartridge Problem
  • Depleted Ink Cartridge
  • Incompatible Cartridge
  • Ink Cartridge Failure
  • Print cartridge(s) missing or not detected
  • Cartridge Issue
  • Printer Cannot Print

If you see a Use Setup Cartridges message, see 'Use SETUP Cartridges' Error for more help.
note:
If you see an Incompatible, Incompatible Cartridge or Defective Cartridge message for the Cyan cartridge and have an HP Officejet 6810, 6820, 6950, 6960, 8010, 8010e, or HP OfficeJet Pro 6230, 6830, 6960, 6970, 8020, 8020e, 8030, or 8030e series printer, see HP OfficeJet Printers - 'Incompatible Cartridge' message for more help.

Step 1: Check your cartridges

Make sure the cartridge numbers match your printer and the country/region where the printer was purchased.
Go to HP Store and verify the cartridge numbers for your printer model and country/region. Replace any incompatible cartridges.
note:
HP+ printers require Original HP cartridges.

Step 2: Reset the printer

Reset the printer to recover from printer failures.
  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the power source.
  3. Wait 60 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power cord to a wall outlet and to the printer.
    note:
    HP recommends plugging the printer directly into a wall outlet.

Step 3: Identify your cartridges

Read the section that most closely matches your printer's cartridges.
