HP LaserJet Pro 4001-4004 - Install the tray extension kit

This document provides the procedure to install the tray extension kit.

Note:

After installing the tray extension kit, you must upgrade the firmware on the printer. The tray extension kit will not function properly until the firmware is updated.

The steps to upgrade the firmware are included in this document.

The tray extension kit is available for the following printer models:

  • HP LaserJet Pro 4001

  • HP LaserJet Pro 4002

  • HP LaserJet Pro 4003

  • HP LaserJet Pro 4004

Step one: Install the tray extension kit

Follow these steps to install the tray extension kit.

The tray extension kit includes the Tray 2 extension, and the output tray extension.

  1. Press the Power button to turn off the printer, and then disconnect the power cord from the back of the printer.

  2. Disconnect the USB or network cable and the phone cable for the fax (if applicable) from the rear of the printer.

  3. Pull Tray 2 out and lift up slightly to remove it completely from the printer.

  4. Remove the rear panel on the tray.

  5. Slide the tray extension onto the back end of the tray and make sure it snaps into place.

  6. Install the rear panel on the extension tray and make sure it snaps into place.

  7. Reinstall the tray in the printer.

    Note:

    The tray extension will extend beyond the printer by 305 mm (12 inches). Ensure the surface is long enough to support the extended tray.

  8. Remove the output tray extension cover from the printer.

  9. Install the output tray extension.

    Note:

    When installed correctly, the output tray extension sits in place and does not have any tabs to secure it to the printer.

  10. Reconnect the USB or network cable and the phone cord for fax (if applicable) to the rear of the printer.

  11. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer, and then press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Step two: Upgrade the firmware

The firmware must be upgraded before the tray extension kit accessory will function properly. This procedure only needs to be done one time during first time set up. It is not required if the printer is moved to an new location.

To check the version of firmware that is currently installed on the printer, print a Printer Status Report using the steps in the section below. The firmware version is listed on the report.
