HP LaserJet Pro 4001-4004, MFP 4101-4104 - Printer will not print a test page

Issue

When attempting to print a test page on HP LaserJet Pro 4001-4004 or MFP 4101-4104 printer model series, the printer fails to print.

Troubleshoot printing test page issues

Learn how to resolve the issue using any one of the following options to print a test page.

  • Option one: Use the HP Smart app

  • Option two: Use the IP address of the printer

Before you begin:

  • Ensure that the power cable, USB cable, and network cable are connected correctly.

  • Confirm that there is paper in the printer tray.

Option one: Use the HP Smart app

Print using HP Smart app

Use the following instructions to download and install HP Smart app.

  1. On your computer, open a Web browser and go to hpsmart.com/download, and then click Install HP Smart.

  2. Create an HP account to access all printer functions.

    Note:

    An HP account is required when setting up HP Smart for the first time.

  3. Follow the onscreen instructions to add a printer in the HP Smart app.

  4. Use the HP Smart app to print a test page.

    To print, select a print job type from the HP Smart app home screen, and then select the item to print. Change any print job settings, if desired.

Option two: Use the IP Address of a printer

Make sure to obtain the IP address of a printer to add the printer in Windows.

Step one: Obtain the IP Address of the printer

  1. Depending on your printer model, follow these steps to locate the IP address of the printer:

    • HP LaserJet Pro 4001-4004

      1. On the printer control panel, press the OK button to display the Home screen.

      2. Use the arrow buttons to navigate to and open the following menus: SetupNetwork SetupGeneral Settings.

      3. On the General Settings menu, select Show the IP Address, and then select Yes to display the printer's IP address or host name.

    • HP LaserJet Pro MFP 4101-4104

      From the Home screen on the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon , or the Ethernet icon , to view the printer's IP address or host name.

  2. Make sure to note the correct IP address of the printer. This information is required to add a printer in Windows.

Step two: Connect your printer to a Windows computer using an IP address

Depending on your Windows version, add a printer using an IP address in Windows.

Windows 11

Follow these steps to add a printer using an IP address in Windows 11.

  1. Click the Windows icon to open the start menu, and then click Settings.

  2. In the left pane, click Bluetooth & devices.

  3. Select Printers & scanners.

  4. In Add a printer or scanner, click Add device.

  5. Wait for the message “The printer that I want isn’t listed” to display.

  6. Select the Add manually option.

  7. Select Add a printer using IP address or hostname, and then click Next.

  8. In Hostname or IP address, enter the IP address of the printer obtained in Step one.

    If you do not have the IP address or to confirm the IP address of the printer, see Step one: Obtain the IP Address of the printer

  9. (Optional) After the printer has been connected to your computer, type in a display name for your printer and then click Next.

  10. Click Print a test page, and then click Finish.

Windows 10

Follow these steps to add a printer using an IP address in Windows 10.

  1. Right-click the Windows icon to open the start menu, click Settings, and then click Devices.

  2. In the left pane, click Printers & scanners.

  3. Click Add a printer or scanner.

    The computer will search for printers. Wait for the option “The printer that I want isn’t listed” to display.

  4. Select “The printer that I want isn’t listed” option.

  5. Select Add a printer using IP address or hostname, and then click Next.

  6. In Hostname or IP address, enter the IP address of the printer obtained in Step one.

    If you do not have the IP address or to confirm the IP address of the printer, see Step one: Obtain the IP Address of the printer

  7. (Optional) After the printer has been connected to your computer, type in a display name for your printer and then click Next.

  8. Click Print a test page, and then click Finish.
