HP Business Notebook PCs - HP Power Manager

HP Power Manager is a battery management tool for commercial notebooks. HP Power Manager enables you and your IT administrator to monitor the health status of your battery and to change your battery settings from the operating system instead of the BIOS.

Using HP Power Manager, you can find information about the battery such as design and full charge capacity. You can also access settings such as Maximize My Battery Health and Set Your Battery Schedule. Set Your Battery Schedule allows you to set times for your computer to use the internal battery, even if your computer is plugged in to AC power all the time.

Note:

You can also manage or limit Maximize My Battery Health and Set Your Battery Schedule in the BIOS.

Note:

If you uninstall HP Power Manager, the current settings are preserved and controlled by the BIOS.

IT personnel can use HP Power Manager to remotely view battery information and manage battery functions. They can also promote battery health throughout the organization by remotely enabling Maximize My Battery Health.

Note:

ITDM users can access HP Power Manager controls via desktop sharing when remoting. This allows the ITDM user to access the device’s battery information in real-time and eliminates the need to physically access BIOS controls.

IT permissions and/or third-party remote management software is required and sold separately.

Select the battery charge mode

HP Power Manager enables you to view and change battery charge modes from the operating system. HP recommends that you choose your battery settings in HP Power Manager based on battery usage and age.

Let HP Manage My Battery Charging setting

The Let HP Manage My Battery Charging setting dynamically changes how the system charges the battery based on the age of the battery and usage over time.

Note:

On some devices, this setting might be called Let HP Manage My Battery.

Use this setting in the following situations:

  • Mixed-use environments where the notebook is regularly removed from AC power and the battery is allowed to discharge.

  • Prefer a single process for your organization.

  • The notebook is less than a year old.

Note:

Turn on the HP Intelligent Charging setting to use a learning algorithm to dynamically adjust your battery charging settings.

Maximize My Battery Health setting

The Maximize My Battery Health setting discharges the battery to an 80% charge level and limits the maximum state-of-charge on the notebook battery to 80% of the maximum state-of-charge for the battery, which has been proven to optimize battery health and helps mitigate battery swelling due to high state-of-charge. The notebook battery remains at a maximum state-of-charge of 80% until you change the setting.

Use this setting in the following situations:

  • Environments where the notebooks are continually connected to AC power and seldom removed and allowed to discharge (including remote office environments).

  • The notebooks are one-year old or older (older systems might have been exposed to accelerating factors such as high state-of-charge over time).

What to expect from changing the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health

Changing the default setting to Maximize My Battery Health causes the following:

  • This setting results in a reduced run time between charges, because it limits the charging capacity of the notebook’s battery to 80% of the currently available full charge capacity.

  • You will continue to see the battery charge at 100% in the Windows icon tray, with 100% representing the new, adjusted full charge capacity.

  • The change to Maximize My Battery Health has no impact on the system performance.

Note:

Before this update, Maximize My Battery Health caused the Windows icon tray to display a maximum charge of 80%. After the update, the Windows icon tray displays a maximum charge of 100%. This change was made to create a more user-friendly and consistent customer experience.

Note:

After this update, if you are running the Windows 11 operating system, a small heart icon is displayed in the Windows icon tray. This heart icon indicates that a battery health feature has been enabled.

Set a battery schedule

The Set Your Battery Schedule screen allows you to specify times when you want to use the computer battery. It does not allow you to schedule charging times.

Note:

Access to this function can be limited using the BIOS.

  1. Click Set Your Battery Schedule on the Battery Charge Manager tab.

Battery Charge Manager Set Your Battery Schedule
  2. Use the drop-down menus to select a Start Time and End Time (in 30-minute intervals) for each day of the week. The total time to use your battery each day is calculated.

  3. If you want to set a battery charge level at which the computer starts charging, move the When plugged in, start charging when the battery reaches slider or select a percentage from the drop-down menu beneath the slider.

    Note:

During the scheduled time, when the computer is connected to AC power, the computer charges only to this set battery charge level. After the battery charge level reaches the selected percentage, it neither increases nor decreases.

  4. Select one of the following options:

    • Click Apply to save your selections.

    • To clear your choices, click Restore Default.

  5. Click the left arrow icon next to Back to Battery Charge Manager at the top of the screen to return to the Battery Charge Manager screen.

Optimize your PC (select models only)

You can select a power mode to optimize your PC for your productivity needs.

Note:

When you use System Control to manage your PC performance, the Windows power modes do not work.

  1. In HP Power Manager, select the System Control tab.

  2. Select a Device Mode from one of the following options:

    • Smart Sense: Optimizes power and thermal performance based on usage.

    • Cool: If the computer feels warm, the Cool setting increases fan speed and decreases CPU performance to lower the PC temperature.

    • Quiet: Turns off the fan and decreases the CPU performance to minimize noise from the PC.

    • Performance: Enables increased CPU usage and fan speed. You must have the AC adapter connected to select the Performance setting.

    • OLED Power Saving Mode: Enable this setting to optimize OLED power consumption. This mode might affect screen brightness and picture quality.

      Note:

OLED Power Saving Mode is available only on computers with OLED panels.
