HP LaserJet Enterprise - How to obtain the status of the maintenance kit

This document provides information regarding changes HP implemented to estimate the life of a maintenance kit and suggestions on how to determine the estimated life of the maintenance kit.

Introduction

Customers who have historically viewed the Maintenance Kit Interval and the Pages Since Last Maintenance information to calculate the estimated life of the maintenance kit should now view the Supplies Status Page to estimate the life of the maintenance kit. HP LaserJet Enterprise printers using firmware version 3.4 or newer will no longer list the Maintenance Kit Interval information on the Configuration Page. HP implemented this change because the number of Engine Rotations of a maintenance kit in these printers more accurately reflects the available usage of the maintenance kit.

Note:

The changes to the Configuration Page does not apply to HP LaserJet Enterprise Color printers as these printers utilize a separate fuser and transfer kit.

Applicable printer series

The removal of the Maintenance Kit Interval information in the Configuration Page applies to the following printer series:

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M601

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M602

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603

  • HP LaserJet Enterprise M604

Estimated life of a maintenance kit

A maintenance kit for a LaserJet printer includes paper pickup rollers, paper feed/separation rollers, a transfer roller, and a fuser assembly. When the printer reaches the maximum Engine Rotations, the maintenance kit should be replaced to maintain printer reliability and print quality.

Changes to estimate the life of the maintenance kit

For an HP LaserJet Enterprise printer, the pre-printing and post-printing routine requires the Engine Rotations of a printer’s rollers and fuser to keep the paper path clear. As a result, when the printer’s average print jobs are four pages or fewer, the number of Engine Rotations required could be greater than the number of printed pages. This would trigger the control panel of the printer to display a “Maintenance Kit very low” message earlier than the expected pages stated for the maintenance kit. The Pages Since Last Maintenance field was removed in version 4.8.

Note:

If customers print more than four pages with a Letter or A4 size paper, the expected estimated life of the maintenance kit will be as stated in the HP long-life consumables Data sheet.

Note:

In previous documents, the terms "cycles" and "rotations" were used interchangeably, but the cycles on the Configuration Page are not the rotations or gear cycles discussed in this document. "Cycles" are only linked to a page pick and have no link to the fuser rotations.

HP decided to change the measurement of the maintenance kit life estimates to be based on Engine Rotations instead of pages to more accurately reflect and communicate the life of the supply messages on the printer’s control panel.

Note:

Factors such as media size, media weight, print mode, environmental conditions and calibration cycles will impact the printer rotations.

  • The fuser gears are part of the main drive gears. When paper is pulled from the lowest tray, the fuser gears begin to rotate and they continue to rotate until the final page of the print job is delivered to the output tray.

For a large print job, the pages are stacked together with a small gap between the pages and the page pick/delivery overhead is minimized.

  • The fuser life is validated with a three to four page intermittent job from Tray 2 and confirmed with high confidence.

When users continuously print a duplex page from the lowest tray, it causes wear on the system.

Obtain the status of the maintenance kit

To view the status of the maintenance kit gauge, print a Supplies Status Page from the printer’s control panel.

Depending on your printer’s control panel, use the procedure to print the Supplies Status Page.

Print a Supplies Status Page on a LCD control panel

Follow these steps to print a Supplies Status Page when using a LCD control panel:

  1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, use the down arrow button (Down arrow button) to scroll to the Administration menu, and then open the following menus:

    1. Reports

    2. Configuration/Status Pages

  2. Use the down arrow button (Down arrow button) to scroll to the Supplies Status Page, and then press the OK button.

  3. Use the up arrow button (Up arrow button) to select the Print option, and then press the OK button to print the page.

Print a Supplies Status Page on a Touchscreen control panel

Follow these steps to print a Supplies Status Page when using a Touchscreen control panel:

  1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, scroll to touch Administration, and then open the following menus:

    1. Reports

    2. Configuration/Status Pages

  2. Touch the Supplies Status Page option.

  3. Touch the Print button to print the page.
