HP Commercial Notebook PCs - Windows Password Security Question Does Not Work if Computer Name Is as Same as Local User Account Name

DESCRIPTION
The Windows Password Security Question feature does not work if the Computer name is the same as the Local User account name. Windows will require a password reset key from a USB flash drive instead of answering the security questions.
The following message is displayed:
This feature requires removable media, such as a USB flash drive.
Please connect a USB flash drive and then try again.

SCOPE
The information in this document applies all HP computers running the operating systems listed below:
Operating Systems:
  • Microsoft Windows 10 RS5 (Version 1809)
  • Microsoft Windows 10 19H2 (Version 1909)
  • Microsoft Windows 10 19H1 (Version 1903)
RESOLUTION
It is not recommended to set the Computer name same as the Local User account name.
note:
If you do not see security questions after you select the Reset password link, make sure your device name isn't the same as your local user account name (the name you see when you sign in). To see your device name, right-click Start in the taskbar, select System, and scroll to the Device specifications section. If the device name is the same as your account name, you can create a new administrator account, sign in as an administrator, and then rename your PC (when you view your device name, you can also rename it).
Refer to the following Microsoft link for more information on changing or resetting your Windows password. Change or reset your Windows password.
  • If the user has forgotten the password:
    • Re-install the Operating System (OS). See the Microsoft link for more information on Recovery options in Windows 10. Refer to the section Reset Your PC > Reset your PC from the sign-in screen.
  • If the user remembers the password, perform the appropriate option listed below:
Option 1. Change the computer name from the Local User name.
  1. Right click on the Start button.
  2. Select System.
  3. Click Rename This PC.
  4. Input a new Computer Name.
  5. Click Next.
  6. Click Restart now to restart the computer.
Option 2. Create a password reset disk on a USB flash drive.
  1. Connect a USB drive to the computer.
  2. Press the Windows key + S on your keyboard to bring up the search bar.
  3. Type Control Panel.
  4. Select Control Panel.
  5. Click on the View by option in the drop down list and select Large icons.
  6. Click on User Accounts.
  7. Click on Create a password reset disk.
  8. Follow the on screen instructions to create the password reset disk. Always store the password reset disk in a safe place.
