HP LaserJet, HP PageWide - Unable to auto-duplex and 2-sided printing fails after installing the HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) in Windows

Issue

After installing the Universal Print Driver (UPD) on an HP LaserJet, HP LaserJet Enterprise, HP LaserJet Pro, HP OfficeJet Enterprise, HP PageWide Enterprise, or HP PageWide Pro printer, cannot automatically duplex or cannot print two-sided.

Solution

  1. Check the User Guide and make sure your printer model supports automatic duplexing.
    note:
Auto-duplex models are typically indicated by a 'd' in the model name, for example, the HP LaserJet Enterprise M604dn. If the printer only supports manual duplexing, the control panel or the UPD driver will prompt with manual duplex instructions. If the printer does support auto duplexing and you receive a prompt in the driver and/or the control panel to manually duplex the print job, the media size selected for auto-duplex might not be supported. Select a different media size and check the User Guide for supported media types.
    1. Search for the printer model number.
    2. Click User Guides from the left pane.
  2. Make sure a Windows Quick Set is not selected that contradicts the desired setting.
    1. Open the Windows App and open the document you want to print.
    2. Select Print and click Properties.
    3. Select the Finishing tab.
      • If it reads Print On Both Sides, continue to the next step.
      • If it reads Print on both sides (manually), make sure the printer supports automatic duplex printing.
  3. Open the HP Universal Printing Properties.
    1. In the Windows search field, search for the Control Panel.
    2. Select Devices and Printers.
    3. Right-click the UPD printer icon and select Printer Properties.
  4. Update the driver settings.
    1. Click the Device Settings tab.
    2. Under Installable Options, click Automatic Configuration: Off (the default) to display the drop-down list.
    3. Select Update Now.
    4. Click Apply and wait for the driver to retrieve the printer information.
      note:
If the update fails, the setting will default to Not Installed.
    5. Try again to print a duplex job.
      • If the duplex job prints, the issue is resolved.
      • If the duplex job does not print or the update fails, continue to the next step.
  5. Manually change the duplex setting.
    1. Click the Device Settings tab.
    2. Under Installable Options, click the Duplex Unit (for 2-Sided Printing): option to display the drop-down list.
    3. Select Installed and click Apply.
    4. Try again to print a duplex job.
      • If the duplex job prints, the issue is resolved.
      • If the duplex job prints on two separate pages, then continue to the next step
      • If the duplex job does not print and you receive a manual duplex prompt, then auto-duplexing might not be supported for the media size or type you trying to print.
  6. Open Print server properties and uninstall the UPD.
    1. In the Windows search field, search for the Control Panel.
    2. Select Devices and Printers.
    3. Click the UPD printer icon.
    4. Click Print server properties.
    5. Click the Drivers tab.
    6. Select the HP Universal Printing driver and click Remove.
    7. Select the Remove driver and driver package option and click OK.
    8. Click Yes to confirm.
  7. Reinstall the UPD using Traditional mode.
    note:
Be sure to install the latest HP Universal Print Driver (UPD) version available from HP.com. Older versions might not have the latest features available.
    1. Click Download the HP Universal Print Driver.
    2. Expand the Driver-Universal Print Driver section.
    3. Click Download.
    4. Click Run.
    5. Select the Traditional option.
      note:
If you install the UPD using the USB or Dynamic option, or use a different method such as the Add printer wizard, you might have different results. The Traditional method is recommended.
    6. Type the IP address and wait for the printer to be discovered.
  8. Try again to print a duplex job.
    • If the duplex job prints, the issue is resolved.
    • If the duplex job does not print, manually run the Update Now feature again to update the UPD features from the printer.
      note:
After performing an Update Now, the printer capabilities are retrieved and any features that the printer does not support will be greyed out. If you do not this update, features may appear in the driver that are not supported by the printer.
  9. Make sure that the Windows App settings match what you have configured in the UPD driver.
    note:
Print settings in Windows Apps such as Word will always override the printer driver settings.
  10. Try again to print a duplex job.
    • If the page prints two-sided, the issue is resolved.
    • If the page does not print two-sided, this feature might not be supported on the printer.
      note:
If you receive a prompt in the driver and the control panel to manually duplex the print job, the media size selected for auto-duplex might not be supported. Select a different media size and check the User Guide for supported media types.
