HP PageWide MFP 774, 779, HP PageWide Enterprise MFP 780, 785 - Setting up the printer (hardware) (dn, dns, and f models)

1. Select a site to place the printer that meets the following specifications:
   • A sturdy work surface in a well-ventilated and dust-free area, and away from direct sunlight
   • Temperature range: 10° - 30° C (50° - 86° F)
   • Humidity range: 10% - 80%
   • Sufficient space around the printer to open all doors and trays

     caution:

   The 774dn, 779dn, 780dn, and 785f models each weigh 69.1 kg (152 lb). HP recommends that four people move the printer.

   The 774dns, 779dns, 780dns model weighs 85.1 kg (187.3 lb). HP recommends that four people move the printer.

2. Take the HP printer out of the box, and make sure that the contents match this illustration:

3. Remove the tape from the outside of the printer. Open the right door, remove the orange shipping restraints, and then close the right door.

4. 774dns, 779dns, and 780dns models only: Remove the orange shipping restraints from the paper output area on the printer.

1. Lower the front cartridge door.

2. Remove the orange shipping restraint from the cartridge area.

3. Remove the cartridge from its packaging.

   note:

   Do not touch the metal contacts on the cartridge as fingerprints can damage the contacts.

4. Insert each new cartridge into the printer. Make sure each cartridge clicks firmly in place.

5. Close the cartridge door.

note:

The procedure to load paper for all 550-sheet trays is the same as for Tray 2. Only Tray 2 is shown here.

  caution:

Keep hands out of the paper tray when closing.

1. Open the tray and remove the cardboard packing.

2. Adjust the paper-length and paper-width guides by squeezing the blue adjustment latches and sliding the guides to the size of the paper being used.

3. Load paper into the tray. Check the paper to verify that the guides touch the stack, but do not bend it.

   note:

   To prevent jams, do not overfill the tray. Be sure that the top of the stack is below the tray-full indicator.

     caution:

   Use Letter/A4 paper in Tray 2 to initialize the printer. The printer will not initialize correctly with Tabloid/A3 paper loaded in Tray 2.

   note:

   If the tray is not adjusted correctly, an error message might display during printing or the paper might jam.

4. Close the tray.

note:

A network cable is not included with the printer.

  caution:

Do not connect a USB cable now. To use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, connect it when prompted during software installation.

note:

A country/region specific adapter for the RJ11 telephone cord might be required to connect to the telephone jack.

1. Connect the power cable between the printer and a grounded AC outlet. To prevent damage to the printer, use only the power cable that is provided with the printer.

     caution:

   Make sure your power source is adequate for the printer voltage rating. The voltage rating is on the printer label. The printer uses 100-127 Vac or 220-240 Vac and 50/60 Hz.

2. Press the Power button to turn on the printer.

3. Allow 26 minutes for the printer to initialize. During this time, if the printer is connected to a network, the network recognizes the printer and assigns an IP address or host name to the printer.
4. On the control panel Initial Setup screen, set the language, the date/time format, and the time zone.
   You can complete advanced setup for network-connected printers from the Embedded Web Server (EWS) at any time after the printer IP address is established. To find the IP address on the printer control panel, select the Information icon , and then select the Network icon . To open the EWS, enter the printer IP address in the address bar of a web browser.

1. From the Home screen on the printer control panel, select Reports.
2. Select Configuration/Status Pages.
3. Select Configuration Page, and then select Print to print the Configuration and Jetdirect pages.
   If the printer is connected to a network, find the IP address on the Jetdirect page.
   • IPv4: If the IP address is 0.0.0.0, or 192.0.0.192, or 169.254.x.x, manually configure the IP address. Otherwise, the network configuration was successful.
   • IPv6: If the IP address begins with "fe80:," the printer should be able to print. If not, manually configure the IP address.

note:

The Configuration Page includes firmware version information that you can refer to when updating the firmware.

note:

Check with the network administrator before updating the printer firmware.

1. Go to 123.hp.com and click Download.
2. Follow the onscreen instructions.

2. Select Software and Drivers.
3. Download the software for your printer model and operating system.
4. Launch the software file from the folder where the file was saved, and follow the on-screen instructions.

  caution:

Do not connect a USB cable now. To use a USB cable to connect the printer to the computer, connect it when prompted during the software installation.

note:

The default driver for macOS 10.14 Mojave and macOS 10.15 Catalina is the Apple AirPrint driver. To install the full featured HP driver, in the Add dialog, select the HP driver from the Use: drop-down list.
