Remove and Replace the Memory Modules on HP ProBook 640 and 645 G2 Notebooks

This document applies to HP ProBook 640 and 645 G2 notebooks.

Before you begin

Have available a small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdriver and small, flat-bladed screwdriver or a flat-bladed alignment/pry tool.
Turn off the computer. Disconnect the Ethernet or modem cable. Disconnect the power cord.
Transfer the computer to a clear, flat, stable work surface over a non-carpeted floor.
HP strongly recommends the use of an anti-static wrist strap and a conductive foam pad when working on the computer.

Make sure the computer is disconnected from power before starting. Before starting, power off the computer and wait for components to cool before starting these procedures.

caution:
This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a noncarpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (such as a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.

Removing the memory modules

Use the steps in this section to remove the memory modules.

The computer might have one memory module or two. The instructions are the same.

Step 1 Remove the bottom cover. For detailed instructions, see Remove and Replace the Bottom Cover on HP ProBook 640 and 645 G2 Notebooks.
Step 2 Remove the battery. For detailed instructions, see Remove and Replace the Battery HP ProBook 640 and 645 G2 Notebooks.
Step 3 Push both arms outward simultaneously to release the memory module to the spring tension position. caution: When handling a memory module, use care to prevent touching the memory chips on the board. Touching the memory chips could damage or destroy the memory.
Step 4 Grasp the memory module by the edges and pull gently to remove it.
Step 5 Place the memory module in a static dissipative bag.

Replacing the memory modules

Use the steps in this section to replace the memory modules.

Step 1 Grasp the memory module by the edges and remove it from the static dissipative bag.
Step 2 Align the notch in the memory module with the key in the memory module slot on the system board.
Step 3 At an angle, gently insert the memory module into its slot on the system board.
Step 4 Press the memory module down to latch the arms. The clips will snap into place and hold the memory module in place.
