HP All-in-One PCs - Testing the AC Power Adapter

This document pertains to HP and Compaq All-in-One computers that use an AC power adapter and power cable combination.
Follow the steps of this document if your All-in-One computer does not power on, the power LED is off, there is no fan noise or beep tone, or if the computer does not respond when pressing the power button.
The cause of the lack of energy can be a defective AC adapter, power cable, or a defective component on the system board of the computer. Use the information in this document to identify the cause of the power problem.
If your computer uses only a power cord, refer to the HP document Troubleshooting Power Supply Issues.

Before you begin, perform a hard reset

Many startup errors and other problems can be resolved by decreasing the amount of power stored in hardware components. Decreasing stored power is sometimes referred to as a hard reset. Use the following steps to perform a hard reset on your computer:
  1. Disconnect the AC adapter, power cord, and all connected devices from the computer. This includes removing thumb drives and camera-type memory cards from card reader slots.
  2. If the computer is on, press and hold the power button on the computer until the computer shuts off.
  3. With the power off and the AC adapter and power cord disconnected, press the power button on the computer for 15 seconds. The power light indicator on or near the power button might turn on briefly but then go out.
  4. Reconnect the power cord and turn on the power.
If your computer does not power on, continue to the next section.
