HP LaserJet Enterprise M604, M605, M606 - Removal and replacement: embedded MultiMedia Card (eMMC)

Introduction

This document provides the procedures to remove and replace the eMMC component.

Before performing service

Turn the printer power off
  • Disconnect the power cable.
      warning:
    To avoid damage to the printer, turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, and then remove the power cord before attempting to service the printer.
  • Disconnect all network cables.
      caution:
    This part contains components that are electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive. To reduce the possibility of ESD damage, always touch the sheet-metal chassis to ground yourself before touching an ESD-sensitive part.
    note:
    Do not replace the formatter, DC controller, and eMMC PCA or hard-disk drive simultaneously during a single printer servicing. Doing so might cause the printer to become unstable or inoperable.
    note:
    Data stored on the eMMC is not secure and cannot be encrypted.

Required tools

  • No special tools are required to install this part.

After performing service

Turn the printer power on
  • Connect the power cable.
  • Use the power switch to turn the power on.

Post service test

Make sure that the printer initializes to a Ready state.
Print a configuration page to make sure that the printer is functioning correctly.

Step 1: Remove the formatter cover

  1. Grasp the handle on the formatter cover (callout 1), and then slide the cover toward the rear of the printer to remove it.

  2. Open the formatter case door.

Step 2: Remove the eMMC

  1. Disconnect two connectors (callout 1).

  2. Locate the eMMC component on the formatter.

  3. Pull the eMMC straight off of the formatter to remove it.

Step 3: Unpack the replacement eMMC

Unpack the replacement part from the packaging.
  caution:
This part contains components that are electrostatic discharge (ESD) sensitive. To reduce the possibility of ESD damage, always touch the sheet-metal chassis to ground yourself before touching an ESD-sensitive part.
note:
HP recommends responsible disposal of the defective part.

Step 4: Install the eMMC

  1. Before installing the new eMMC component, note that the eMMC connector (callout 1) is keyed, and can only be installed in one direction onto the formatter connector (callout 2).

  2. Align the connector on the eMMC with the connector on the formatter, and then push the eMMC onto the formatter to install it. Verify that the eMMC is fully seated in the connector.

Step 5: Install the formatter cover

  1. Close the formatter case door.

  2. Align the tabs (callout 1) on the formatter cover with the slots (callout 2) in the right cover, and then slide the formatter cover toward the front of the printer to install it.

Step 6: Reinstall the product firmware

note:
If this installation is a replacement eMMC, use the following steps to reinstall the firmware.
  1. Do the one of the following:
      1. Select Get drivers, Software, and Firmware, and then select the appropriate product by name.
        note:
        More than one product model might be listed. Make sure to select the correct model so that the upgraded firmware supports all of the product functions.
      2. Select the driver language and operating system.
      3. Locate the firmware download, and then select Download.
    • Outside the U.S., go to www.hp.com/support.
      1. Select your country/region.
      2. Select Drivers & Downloads.
      3. Enter the product name in the Find my product dialogue box, and then select Go.
        note:
        Click on the How do I find my product name/number? link to see a short video on identifying the printer name and number.
      4. Select the appropriate product by name.
        note:
        More than one product model might be listed. Make sure to select the correct model so that the upgraded firmware supports all of the product functions.
      5. Select the driver language and operating system.
      6. Locate the firmware download, and then select Download.
  2. Copy the firmware upgrade file to the root directory of a USB flash drive. The firmware upgrade file has a .bdl extension.
  3. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port near the printer control panel.
  4. Turn on the printer.
  5. The following message displays on the control panel depending on product configuration:
    • eMMC only installed: Error: 99.39.67 eMMC Not Bootable
    • Optional HDD installed: Error: 99.09.63 Incorrect Disk
    Touch the OK button to continue.
  6. Wait for the Pre-Boot menu to appear on the control-panel display, and then touch the down arrow button to scroll to 3 Administrator. Touch the OK button to select it.
  7. Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 1 Download. Touch the OK button to select it.
  8. Touch the down arrow button to scroll to 3 USB Thumbdrive. Touch the OK button to select it.
  9. Several .bdl files might be listed. Touch the down arrow button to scroll to the firmware upgrade file that you downloaded previously. Touch the OK button to select it.
  10. Wait while the file transfers. When the transfer is complete, the message Complete displays on the screen.
  11. Turn the printer off, remove the USB flash drive, and then turn the printer on. Wait for several minutes while the printer initializes. If the upgrade is unsuccessful, try sending the firmware upgrade file again.
