HP PCs - Creating and Using a Microsoft Recovery USB Drive (Windows 10)

This document pertains to all HP and Compaq computers with Windows 10.
You can use a recovery USB drive to start your computer in case of a problem. The drive also contains Windows system recovery tools that can help you recover Windows from a serious error or restore your computer from a system image.
Creating a Microsoft recovery USB drive
A recovery drive can troubleshoot problems with your computer even when the operating system does not open. You can also copy the HP Recovery partition to the drive. Follow these steps to create a recovery USB drive:
  1. Connect a USB drive to the computer.
      caution:
    Everything on the drive is deleted when you create the recovery drive.
      note:
    Copying the recovery partition uses more than 16 GB of space and requires a large capacity USB drive.
  2. In Windows, type create a recovery drive into Search, and then select Create a recovery drive from the search results.
  3. Select Back up system files to the recovery drive if you want to copy the recovery partition to the USB drive. Copying the recovery partition uses more than 16 GB of space and requires a large capacity USB drive.

  4. Click Next.
    The Recovery Drive creator determines how much space is required to create the recovery drive.
  5. Select the USB drive you want to use, and then click Next.

  6. Click Create.
    The recovery drive is created.
  7. Click Finish when the drive is ready.

  8. Store the recovery drive in a safe place.
Using the recovery USB drive in Windows 10
Follow these steps to use the recovery USB drive:
  1. Turn off the computer.
  2. Insert the recovery USB drive into a USB port on the computer and turn the computer back on.
  3. Press F11 as soon as your computer turns on until your system loads System Recovery.
  4. Click the language for your keyboard.
    Use the following sections to resolve computer issues:
System restore
You can use a restore point recorded on your PC to open Microsoft System Restore and restore your computer to a previous state. Follow these steps to open System Restore:
  1. Click Troubleshoot.
  2. On the Troubleshoot screen, click Advanced options, and then click System Restore.
  3. Click the operating system (Windows 10).
    System Restore opens.
  4. Click Next.
    Select a restore point, and then click Next.
  5. Click Finish to restore the computer to the selected restore point.
