HP PCs - Setting Up and Using the HP DataPass Broadband Network (Windows 8)

This document provides steps on how to set up and use the HP DataPass broadband network on a Windows 8 device.
With HP DataPass you receive 200MB or 250MB per month for free to browse the internet through 3G. On the date of renewal you receive another round of 200MB or 250MB for free.
The HP DataPass app seamlessly shifts between your preferred Wi-Fi spots to the HP DataPass 3G connection to provide the best user experience.

Registering for HP DataPass Service

After you complete setting up Windows over Wi-Fi, the HP DataPass app automatically downloads.
  1. After you complete setting up Windows over Wi-Fi, the HP DataPass app downloads automatically.
    note:
    If you selected a 3G connection during the setup process, you can only create a local account at startup.
  2. From the Start screen, click or tap the HP DataPass app live tile, or click or tap HP DataPass under Applications.
    note:
    You can also use the URL provided on the screen cling: hpdatapass.foggmobile.com/register to register with HP DataPass. If you access the website over a Wi-Fi connection, the browser displays a page with further instructions specific for Windows devices.
    The HP DataPass basic registration automatically displays the basic registration form.
  3. In the Registration window, type your first and last name, email address, and password.
  4. Type your date of birth.
    note:
    You must meet the minimum age requirements for your country to use this register with HP DataPass.
  5. Click or tap to agree to the Terms and Conditions, and then click or tap Register.

Completing the Advanced registration

If you are in a country that require advanced registration processing, you must provide additional information to confirm your identity to comply with local regulation concerning entering a mobile broadband subscription.
You must upload a photo copy of a valid ID document, such as a passport number or driver’s license.
  1. From the Choose a type of photo ID drop-down menu, select your type of ID.

  2. Type the ID number from your chosen ID, and then click or tap Confirm and continue.
    note:
    At this point, you can choose to skip uploading a photo copy of your ID and finish the registration. However, you must upload a photo copy of your ID within 30 days after registration in order to continue using your HP DataPass service. If you do not updated an ID after 30 days, any browser request redirects you to the HP DataPass portal.
  3. Click or tap Ok, got it to take a photo of your ID.
  4. Click or tap the camera icon to take the photo, and then click or tap the green check to confirm that the photo is clear and that numbers are readable.
    note:
    You can also upload an existing copy of your ID from your hard drive.
    For some countries you are finished with the advanced registration. However, if you are required to match the ID document with a snapshot of your face, continue with these steps.
  5. Click or tap Ok, got it to take a photo of your face with your computer’s webcam.
  6. Click or tap the camera icon to a take a picture, and then click or tap to confirm if your face displays clearly in the picture.
    note:
    You cannot choose to upload a photo from your hard drive for face validation.
    The browser might close.
    The next time you open the DataPass app, the app checks whether the advanced registration was successful.
    • If the advanced registration was successful, the DataPass home screen displays.
    • If the advanced registration was not successful, the app basic registration screen displays and you restart the process.

Opening HP DataPass

From the Start screen, click or tap the HP DataPass live tile, or click or tap HP DataPass under Applications.
You can also access the HP DataPass app to view your account status.
If you are connected via Wi-Fi, you have to manually sign in to view the account.
If you are connected via 3G, a cellular data connection, the computer signs you in automatically.

Using HP DataPass

This section describes the various features available on HP DataPass.

The red message field in the top displays email and ID verification (with a link to the advanced registration pages) as well as low data notification.
The Status panel displays the network that you are connected to (this feature is not in the web portal). The HP DataPass app seamlessly shifts between your preferred Wi-Fi spots to the HP DataPass 3G connection, providing the best user experience.
The Data Used panel displays the data allowance available, the data used and the upcoming monthly anniversary date.
The menu bar on the bottom provides links to the Purchase Data, Account, and Support pages.

Changing your monthly data plan

When your monthly allowance is depleted, internet access over the cellular data network is blocked. However, internet access over any Wi-Fi network is not impacted.
When you have used your 200MB or 250MB for the month, the next time you access the internet over the cellular data network, the DataPass home page automatically opens where you can view your data balance and purchase additional data if desired.
note:
An upgrade from a lower valued recurring plan to a higher valued recurring plan is effective immediately upon purchase.
note:
Alternatively, you could use the HP DataPass app over either Wi-Fi or cellular connectivity to purchase additional data allowance. You are only charged the difference between the lower plan and the higher plan.
A downgrade from a higher valued recurring plan to a lower valued recurring plan becomes effective on the next renewal date.
A one-time add-on will be effective immediately upon purchase and you can use the added data until the next renewal date.
note:
Domestic Top-ups are only available when you are on a monthly recurring domestic plan. Footprint Top-ups are only available when you are on a monthly recurring footprint plan.
  1. In the Data Plan section, click or tap Purchase More Data to purchase additional data.

    Your current plan is highlighted; the available paid plans display in a scrolling list.
  2. Select either another data plan for more available data per billing cycle or purchase additional data for the current billing cycle only.

  3. Enter your payment details, and then click or tap Submit.

  4. The additional data is added to your allowance and internet access over cellular data network is restored.

Determining the remaining data on my account

To determine the amount of data remaining on your account, access your HP DataPass account.

Resetting my password

To reset your password or manage your account, access the My Account page from the HP DataPass client or HP DataPass homepage.
If you are having issues logging in, click or tap Forgot password? On the Sign in page on the web or in the client, and then follow the on-screen instructions to reset your password.

Canceling my monthly subscription

Follow these steps to cancel your monthly subscription.
  1. Go to the HP DataPass homepage, and then log in to your account or open the HP DataPass client.
  2. Click or tap Purchase Data.
    Your subscription is highlighted.

  3. Click or tap Cancel subscription to cancel your subscription.
    The subscription is not renewed.

Changing my credit card details

Follow these steps to update your credit card details.
  1. Log into your HP DataPass account.
  2. Click or tap Account, and then click or tap Edit next to Credit card.

Data Plans

If you registered an account on April 10th, the date of renewal is May 10th. You can go to hpdatapass.foggmobile.com/register or open the HP DataPass app to monitor your data balance.
When 20% of the monthly data allowance remains, you receive notification in an email and in the HP DataPass App Notification bar if the App is installed.
