HP Tablets - Changing Power Settings and Modes (Android KitKat, Jelly Bean)

This document applies to HP and Compaq tablets with Android 4.4/KitKat and 4.2/Jelly Bean operating systems.
The battery life of your tablet varies depending on the applications running in the background, the network reception, screen brightness, and other factors. Use this document to learn more about changing the power settings on your tablet.
Depending on the version of Android installed on your tablet, some of the images in this document may not match your tablet exactly.

Turning the tablet on or off, and using the lock screen on your HP tablet

The power button is located in the top right corner on the back or edge of the tablet. Use the power button to turn the tablet on or off, or to lock or unlock the touchscreen.
  • Turn the tablet power on: Press and hold the power button until the HP logo appears on the screen.
  • Turn the tablet power off: Press and hold the power button, and then tap Power off.
  • Turn the LCD on: Briefly press the power button to turn on the LCD screen and display the lock screen. To unlock, tap the lock icon and slide your finger over to the unlocked icon.
If you have set a pattern, PIN, password, or other customized lock for the screen, unlock the screen with your personalized method. Refer to the HP support document Using and Customizing the Lock Screen for more information.
  • Turn the LCD off: Briefly press the power button to put the tablet to sleep, which turns off and locks the LCD screen without turning the tablet off completely.

  4. Consider the steps you can take to reduce the battery drain, depending on what is using the most battery power. For example, if Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are using a large amount of battery power and you do not currently need access to the Internet or a Bluetooth connection, consider putting the tablet in Airplane mode (see Turning off Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on your HP tablet for more information).

Setting the sleep timer on your HP tablet

The sleep setting determines how long the tablet waits before turning off the LCD screen. If the sleep setting is set to 30 seconds, the tablet waits 30 seconds after the last activity before going to sleep. Reducing the amount of time the tablet waits before going to sleep can help make the battery last longer between charges. Use the steps in this section to set the sleep timer:
  1. On the Home screen, tap the All apps icon, and then tap the Settings icon.
  2. In the Device section, tap Display.
    Figure : Display
Display in the Device section of the Settings menu
  3. Tap Sleep.
    Figure : Sleep
Sleep in the Display settings menu
  4. Select how long the tablet should go without activity before the LCD screen is turned off.

Frequently asked questions about HP tablet power usage

Refer to the following frequently asked questions (FAQs) about tablet battery life.

Why is the tablet battery draining so fast?

Battery life varies depending on many factors, including the applications running in the background, screen brightness, and the amount of time the display is turned on or off. See Viewing battery usage data on your HP tablet for steps to identify what is draining the tablet battery.

Can I replace the tablet battery?

The tablet battery is designed to last well beyond the warranty period. You might be able to find solutions for battery replacement online; however, keep in mind that performing a battery replacement might void the warranty.

Why isn't my tablet charging faster?

The tablet charges faster if it is turned off while charging, and if you are using the charger that came with the tablet. Using a charger from another source, such as a cell phone charger, might cause the tablet to charge slowly or not charge at all.
