HP Tablets - Connecting to a Wireless Network (Android KitKat, Jelly Bean)

This document applies to HP and Compaq tablets with Android 4.4/KitKat and 4.2/Jelly Bean operating systems.
An Internet connection is needed for many of the features and functions on your HP tablet. Use the steps in this document to connect to an available Wi-Fi network on your HP tablet.
note:
Depending on the version of Android installed on your tablet, some of the images in this document may not match your tablet exactly.

Connecting to a Wi-Fi network on your HP tablet

Use the steps in this section to set up a new Wi-Fi Internet connection on your tablet.
  1. Tap the All apps icon, and then tap the Settings icon.
  2. In the Wireless & networks section, tap Wi-Fi.

  3. If Wi-Fi is not already on, tap the Wi-Fi OFF/ON indicator to turn it on.

  4. Tap your Wi-Fi network in the list.
    note:
    If you are trying to connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network, and the tablet does not discover or connect to the network, temporarily unhide the network until the tablet establishes a connection.
  5. Enter the network password and any other required information, and then tap Connect.
    The network and password are saved automatically. To forget the stored password, select the Wi-Fi network and then tap Forget.

Finding your Wi-Fi MAC address (for routers with MAC address filtering) on your HP tablet

You might need to manually input the tablet MAC address in the configuration page of your wireless router, if MAC address filtering is enabled on the router. Use the following steps to find the MAC address:
  1. On the Home screen, tap the All apps icon, and then tap the Settings icon.
  2. In the System section, tap About tablet.

  4. Find the address listed under Wi-Fi MAC address.

Setting up a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection on your HP tablet

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection is used to connect your tablet to a private network, for example at your workplace or at school. Before setting up a VPN connection, you must select a pattern, PIN or password for the lock screen. Use the steps in this section to connect to a VPN.
  1. Select a pattern, PIN, or password for the tablet lock screen. Refer to the HP support document Using and Customizing the Lock Screen for instructions.
  2. On the Home screen, tap the All apps icon, and then tap the Settings icon.
  3. In the Wireless & networks section, tap More....

  4. Tap VPN.

  5. Tap the plus (+) symbol in the top right corner.

  6. Enter the required information for your VPN.

  7. Tap Save to connect to the network.

Configuring proxy settings on your HP tablet

If you are using your tablet in a workplace that uses a proxy server, you might need to configure the proxy settings as part of the process of setting up the Wi-Fi connection. Use the following steps to input the proxy information so that you can connect to the Internet:
  1. On the Home screen, tap the All apps icon, and then tap the Settings icon.
  2. In the Wireless & networks section, tap Wi-Fi.

  3. If Wi-Fi is not already on, tap the Wi-Fi OFF/ON indicator to turn it on.

  4. Tap your Wi-Fi network in the list.
  5. Enter the network password and any other required information.
  6. Place a check mark next to Show advanced options.
  7. Tap the drop-down menu next to Proxy settings, and select Manual.

  8. Enter the proxy hostname, proxy port, and any other required information in the provided fields.

    It might be necessary to request information or assistance from your workplace IT professional to complete this step.

  9. Tap Connect to connect to the network.
