HP PCs - Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8)

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. From the Start screen, type recovery manager to open the Search charm, and then select HP Recovery Manager from the search results.
   If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. If a User Account Control window asks if you want to allow the program to make changes to the computer, click Yes.

   note:

   You can also open HP Recovery Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+R.

5. Under Help, click HP Recovery Environment.

   note:

   Your Recovery Manager screen might not look identical to the one shown here, but the steps are the same.

   
6. Recovery Manager asks you if you want to reboot and enter the recovery environment. Click OK.
   The computer restarts. If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning correctly, the Recovery Manager screen displays.
   
7. Under Help, click either Minimized Image Recovery to restore only the operating system, drivers, and some software, or click System Recovery to restore the computer to its original factory configuration. Depending on the configuration of your computer, the option of Minimized Image Recovery might not be available to you.
   
8. When Recovery Manager prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
   • If you have already backed up personal files, or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.
   • If you want to back up your personal files, follow these steps to create a backup.
     1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.
        
     2. Select the method you want to use to choose files to back up:
        • If you want to identify the categories of files to back up, select Auto Selection. This option allows you to select the file type to back up instead of selecting the individual files to back up. For example, you can choose to back up all picture files, all document files, and all video files.
        • If you want to select individual files to back up, select User Selection, and then click Next.
        
     3. Depending on the method you selected, follow one of these steps:
        • Auto Selection (recommended): Select the file types you want to back up, and then click Next. The File Backup Wizard creates the list of files to back up.

          note:

          This might take as long as 30 minutes to complete. Do not interrupt the backup process.

          
        • User Selection: Select Compression to make your backup file smaller, or select No compression to make no change to the size of your backup file, and then click Next.
          

          Click Browse Files to choose the files to back up, and then click Next.

          

          Select the files you want to back up, and then click OK.
     4. Recovery Manager scans the computer for storage devices. Select the storage device to save the backup, and then click Next.
        
     5. Depending on the media selected to store the backup files, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc or a USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next again to confirm the backup.
        Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.

     6. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.
        
9. The HP Recovery Manager Welcome screen displays. Read the on-screen information, then disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
10. Select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next to continue.
    
    HP Recovery Manager prepares the computer for recovery.

    note:

    This process can take as long as 30 to 45 minutes. Do not interrupt HP Recovery Manager during the recovery process.

    

11. When recovery preparation is complete, click Continue to proceed to the installation phase of the recovery process.
    The computer restarts several times during the recovery. This is normal. Do not close, shut down, or disconnect the computer while HP Recovery runs.
    
12. Recovery Manager reformats the Windows partition and reinstalls the original software.
13. After the system recovery is complete, click Finish to restart the computer. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup.
    
14. Once the setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
15. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
16. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is not functioning correctly, this method does not work and an error message displays. If an error message indicates that System Recovery cannot be run from the startup screen, a set of recovery discs or a recovery USB flash drive is needed to perform a system recovery. Follow the instructions listed in one of the following sections, depending on the recovery media available: Recovery from recovery discs (Windows 8) or Recovery from a USB flash drive (Windows 8).

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
3. Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until the Choose your keyboard layout screen or Choose an option, screen displays and then follow these instructions:
   1. In Windows 8 click to select the keyboard layout. This is not available on Windows 8.1
   2. The computer restarts. If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning correctly, the Choose an Option screen displays. Click Troubleshoot.
      
   3. On the Troubleshoot screen, click Recovery Manager.
      
   4. On the operating system selection screen, select your operating system.
      Recovery Manager opens.

HP does not include recovery discs in the box with its personal computers as the recovery software comes on the hard drive. You can obtain recovery discs from HP Support or use Recovery Manager software to create a set of recovery discs yourself. HP recommends creating a set of recovery discs when you receive your computer and storing them in a safe place. Recovery Discs sent to you from HP Support can take as long as 4 to 6 hours to complete system recovery, but recovery discs that you create often take less time to complete system recovery. For more information about creating a set of recovery discs, see Creating Recovery Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive (Windows 8).

1. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
2. Insert the first recovery CD, and then turn off the computer.
3. With the computer off, press and hold the power button to turn on the computer.
4. Immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens.
   
5. Press F9 to open the Boot Option Menu.
6. Use the up or down arrow key to select the CD/DVD drive, and then press Enter.
   

   note:

   More than one CD/DVD drive selection might be available from the list of bootable devices. If so, select one of the CD/DVD selections from the list to see if HP Recovery starts. If recovery does not start or a non-system disk error displays, restart the computer by pressing the power button, and then repeat these steps to select another CD/DVD drive. When recovery starts, continue using the steps to complete recovery.

   note:

   If you cannot select the disc drive from the Boot Menu, disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Mode in the BIOS. For detailed instructions, see the Disabling Secure Boot on a notebook computer (Windows 8) section in this document.

7. A window might display and prompt you to choose whether to run Recovery Manager from the hard disk or from the disc inserted. If this window displays, select Run program from media, and then click Next.
   HP Recovery Manager opens.
   
8. Under Help, click either Minimized Image Recovery to restore only the operating system, drivers, and some software, or click System Recovery to restore the computer to its original factory configuration.
   
9. When Recovery Manager prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
   • If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.

The process for recovering the computer using a USB flash drive is very similar to the process for recovering the computer from recovery discs. You can use the instructions in the Recovery from recovery discs (Windows 8) section for clarification on the process for recovering the computer using a USB flash drive.

3. Insert the USB flash drive into a USB port, and then turn on the computer.
4. Immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens.
   
5. Press F9 to open the Boot Device Options menu.
6. Use the up or down arrow key to select the USB flash drive, and then press Enter.

   note:

   If you cannot select the USB flash drive from the Boot Menu, disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Mode in the BIOS. For detailed instructions, see the Disabling Secure Boot on a notebook computer (Windows 8) section in this document.

7. A window might display and prompt you to choose whether to run Recovery Manager from the hard disk or from the USB flash drive inserted. If this window is displayed, select Run program from media, and then click Next.
   
8. Follow the on-screen instructions to back up your data and recover your computer.
9. Once the recovery and setup are complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
10. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
11. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

Use the following procedure only when you cannot select the recovery media from the Boot Option Menu or when you are using an external optical drive. If you are able to boot from the Recovery media or not, it is very important to reverse the changes made in the BIOS, this means you need to load the BIOS default settings. Otherwise this might cause instability in the system when making updates recommended by HP.

1. Use one of the following methods to open the Computer Setup Utility.
   • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Computer Setup Utility opens.
   • Turn on the computer and immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup menu opens. Then press F10.
   To navigate the menus, choose menu screens by pressing the left or right arrow keys. Use the up or down arrow keys to move through the list of items on the menu screen. Press the Enter key to select an item and open a submenu. Then use the left and right arrow keys to modify the settings. Press the F10 key to save the changes and exit from a submenu, or press the Esc key to exit from a submenu without saving the changes.
2. Use the right arrow key to choose the System Configuration menu. Use the down arrow key to select Boot Options, and then press Enter.
   
   
3. Use the down arrow key to select Secure Boot, press the Enter key, and then use the down arrow key to modify the setting to Disable.
4. Press F10 to accept the changes and exit or use the left arrow key to select Exit, use the down arrow key to select Exit Saving Changes, and then press Enter to select Yes.
5. The Computer Setup Utility closes and the computer restarts. When the computer has restarted, the Operating System Boot Mode Change screen displays, prompting you to confirm the Boot Options change. Type the code shown on the screen, and then press Enter to confirm the change.
6. Use the left arrow key to select the File menu, use the down arrow key to select Save Changes and Exit, and then press Enter to select Yes.
7. The Computer Setup Utility closes and the computer restarts. When the computer has restarted, use the power button to turn off the computer.

4. Move your mouse to the upper right corner of the screen, click Search, and then type recovery.
5. In the search results on the left side of the screen, click Recovery Manager.
   If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. If a User Account Control window asks if you want to allow the program to make changes to the computer, click Yes.
6. Under Help, click HP Recovery Environment.
   
7. The Recovery Manager asks if you want to restore the computer to its original factory shipped condition. Select Yes, and then click Next.
   
8. The computer restarts. If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning correctly, the Recovery Manager window displays.

   note:

   If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is not functioning correctly, a set of recovery discs is needed to run a system recovery. Follow the instructions listed in the section Recovery from recovery discs (Windows 8).

9. If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select System Recovery.
   • Backup your files
     If you want to back up your personal files, follow these steps to create a backup.

     1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), select the files to back up, and then click Next.
        
     2. The file backup wizard scans for files to backup and creates the backup files.
        
     3. Select where you want to save the backup files and click Next.
        
     4. Select the storage device to save the backup, and then click Next.

        note:

        If you select a CD or DVD drive, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc.

        
     5. Depending on the media selected to store the backup files, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc, or a USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next.
        
     6. Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.
        
     7. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Finish to continue the recovery process.

        note:

        If the backup process fails, make sure the capacity of the storage device is large enough to store the files, or try de-selecting some file types to reduce the amount of files that are copied. Other reasons for failed backups might be caused by file corruption. In some cases, it might not be possible to save files using this backup method.

        
     8. Continue to the next section to perform a system recovery.
     9. System restoration complete.

10. After the system recovery is complete, click Finish to restart the computer. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup.
    
11. Once the setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
12. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
13. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is not functioning correctly, this method does not work and an error message displays. If an error message indicates that System Recovery cannot be run from the startup screen, a set of recovery discs or a recovery USB flash drive is needed to perform a system recovery. Follow the instructions listed in one of the following sections, depending on the recovery media available: Recovery from recovery discs (Windows 8) or Recovery from a USB flash drive (Windows 8).

1. Turn off the computer.

   3. The computer restarts. If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning correctly, the Choose an Option screen displays. Click Troubleshoot.
      
   4. On the Troubleshoot screen, click Recovery Manager. Recovery Manager opens.
      
   5. On the operating system selection screen, click your operating system. Recovery Manager opens.
4. If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select System Recovery.
   • Back up your files and then perform a system recovery
     If you want to back up your personal files, follow these steps to create a backup.

     1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.

     5. Depending on the media selected to store the backup files, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc, or a USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next.
        
     6. Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.
        
     7. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.

        note:

        If the backup process fails, make sure the capacity of the storage device is large enough to store the files, or try de-selecting some file types to reduce the amount of files that are copied. 8. Use the up or down arrow key to select the CD/DVD drive. Then press Enter.
   

   note:

   More than one CD/DVD drive selection might be available from the list of bootable devices. If so, select one of the CD/DVD selections from the list to see if HP Recovery starts. If recovery does not start or a non-system disk error displays, restart the computer by pressing the power button, then repeat these steps to select another CD/DVD drive. When recovery starts, continue using the steps to complete recovery.

   note:

9. A window might display and prompt you to choose whether to run Recovery Manager from the hard disk or from the disc inserted. If this window displays, select Run program from media, and then click Next.
   
10. Select an option based on the type of recovery discs you have:
    • Recovery discs created from your computer:
      Click Factory Reset under I need help immediately. If the next screen prompts you to confirm your choice, select Yes, and then click Next. If no confirmation screen displays, continue with the next step.

      
    • Recovery discs received from HP support:
      Select one of the following options, depending on which selection is shown on your screen, and then click Next.
      • Factory Reset - Reset the computer by erasing the entire drive and restoring to the factory setup
      • Reset the computer by erasing the entire drive and restoring to the factory setup
11. When System Recovery prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
    • If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select System Recovery.
    • If you want to back up your personal files, follow these steps to create a backup.
      1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.
         
      2. Select the file types to back up, and then click Next.
         
      3. Recovery Manager scans the computer for files and creates the backup files.
         
      4. Select the storage device to save the backup, and then click Next.

         note:

         If you select a CD or DVD drive, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc.

         
      5. Depending on the media selected to store the backup files, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc, or a USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next.
         
      6. Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.
         
      7. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.

         note:

         If the backup process fails, make sure the capacity of the storage device is large enough to store the files, or try de-selecting some file types to reduce the amount of files that are copied. Other reasons for failed backups might be caused by file corruption. In some cases, it might not be possible to save files using this backup method.

         
      8. Continue to the next option to perform a system recovery.
12. Recovery Manager reformats the Windows partition and reinstalls the original software. Insert each recovery disc into the CD/DVD drive when prompted to do so.
13. After system recovery is complete, remove the disc. If the tray does not eject the disc, press the eject button on the computer case to eject the disc.
    
14. Click Finish to restart the computer.
15. Depending on which model of computer you have, the computer either turns off or restarts. If the computer turns off, wait 5 seconds, and then turn on the computer.

    note:

    If you are using Support Sent Recovery discs sent from HP, it can take more than an hour to complete the recovery process. Do not interrupt the recovery process. The recovery process is complete when the Windows Setup screens display.

16. Complete Windows setup when the screens display.
17. Once Windows setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
18. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
19. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

8. A window might display and prompt you to choose whether to run Recovery Manager from the hard disk or from the media inserted. If this window displays, select Run program from media, and then click Next.
   
9. Under Help, click System Recovery. Recovery Manager opens.

12. Remove the USB flash drive from the USB port.
13. Click Finish to restart your computer.
    
14. Depending on the model of your computer, the computer either turns off or restarts. If the computer turns off, wait 5 seconds, and then turn on the computer.
15. Complete Windows setup when the screens display.
16. Once Windows setup has been completed, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
17. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
18. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

   • User Selection: Select Compression to make your backup file smaller, or select No compression to make no change to the size of your backup file, and then click Next.
     

     Click Browse Files to choose the files to back up, and then click Next.

     

     Select the files you want to back up, and then click OK.
4. Recovery Manager scans the computer for storage devices. Select the storage device to save the backup, and then click Next.
   
5. The computer prompts you to insert a blank USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next.
   Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.
6. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Finish to continue the recovery process.
   

note:

Use the following procedure only when you cannot select the recovery media from the Boot Option Menu or when you are using an external optical drive. If you are able to boot from the Recovery media or not, it is very important to reverse the changes made in the BIOS, this means you need to load the BIOS default settings. Otherwise this might cause instability in the system when making updates recommended by HP.

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Computer Setup Utility opens.
3. Use the left and right arrow keys to select the Security menu, then use the up and down arrow keys to select Secure Boot Configuration, and then press Enter.
   
4. The Secure Boot Configuration warning displays. Press F10 to continue.
   
5. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Secure Boot, and then use the left and right arrow keys to change the setting to Disable.
   
6. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Legacy Support, and then use the left and right arrow keys to change the setting to Enable.
7. Press F10 to accept the changes.
8. Press F10 again, and then press Enter twice to restart the computer.
   
9. As soon as the computer starts, a message displays indicating that the boot mode has changed.
   
10. Type the four-digit code shown in the message, and then press Enter to confirm the change.

    note:

    No text field displays for the code. This is expected behavior. When you type the numbers, the code is logged without a text field.

    The computer starts Windows 8.

6. Recovery Manager asks you if you want to reboot and enter the recovery environment. Click OK.
   The computer restarts. If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning correctly, the Recovery Manager screen displays.
   
7. Under Help, click either Minimized Image Recovery to restore only the operating system, drivers, and some software, or click System Recovery to restore the computer to its original factory configuration. Depending on the configuration of your computer, the option of Minimized Image Recovery might not be available to you.
   
8. Under Help, click Minimized Image Recovery.
9. When Recovery Manager prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
   • If you have already backed up personal files, or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.

11. Select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next to continue.
    
    HP Recovery Manager prepares the computer for recovery.

    This process can take as long as 30 to 45 minutes. Do not interrupt HP Recovery Manager during the recovery process.

    

12. When recovery preparation is complete, click Continue to proceed to the installation phase of the recovery process.
    The computer restarts several times during the recovery. This is normal. Do not close, shut down, or disconnect the computer while HP Recovery runs.
    
13. Recovery Manager reformats the Windows partition and reinstalls the original software.
14. After the system recovery is complete, click Finish to restart the computer. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup.
    
15. Once the setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
16. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
17. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is not functioning correctly, this method does not work and an error message displays. If an error message indicates that System Recovery cannot be run from the startup screen, a set of recovery discs or a recovery USB flash drive is needed to perform a system recovery. Follow the instructions listed in one of the following sections, depending on the recovery media available: Recovery from recovery discs (Windows 8) or Recovery from a USB flash drive (Windows 8).

You can obtain recovery discs from HP Support or use Recovery Manager software to create a set of recovery discs yourself. HP recommends creating a set of recovery discs when you receive your computer and storing them in a safe place. Recovery Discs sent to you from HP Support can take as long as 4 to 6 hours to complete system recovery, but recovery discs that you create often take less time to complete system recovery. For more information about creating a set of recovery discs, see Creating Recovery Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive (Windows 8).

When recovery starts, continue using the steps to complete recovery.

3. Use the down arrow key to select Secure Boot, press the Enter key, and then use the down arrow key to modify the setting to Disable.
4. Press F10 to accept the changes and exit or use the left arrow key to select Exit, use the down arrow key to select Exit Saving Changes, and then press Enter to select Yes.
5. The Computer Setup Utility closes and the computer restarts. When the computer has restarted, the Operating System Boot Mode Change screen displays, prompting you to confirm the Boot Options change. Type the code shown on the screen, and then press Enter to confirm the change.
6. Use the left arrow key to select the File menu, use the down arrow key to select Save Changes and Exit, and then press Enter to select Yes.
7. The Computer Setup Utility closes and the computer restarts. When the computer has restarted, use the power button to turn off the computer.

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Move your mouse to the upper right corner of the screen, click Search, and then type recovery.
5. In the search results on the left side of the screen, click Recovery Manager.
   If you are prompted for an Administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. If a User Account Control window asks if you want to allow the program to make changes to the computer, click Yes.
6. Under I need help immediately, click System Recovery.
   
7. The Recovery Manager asks if you want to restore the computer to its original factory shipped condition. Select Yes, and then click Next.
   
8. The computer restarts. If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning correctly, the Recovery Manager window displays.

   note:

   If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is not functioning correctly, a set of recovery discs is needed to run a system recovery. Follow the instructions listed in the section Recovery from recovery discs (Windows 8).

   
9. Click System Recovery.
10. When System Recovery prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
    • If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.
    • If you want to back up your personal files, follow these steps to create a backup.
      

      1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.
      2. Select the file types to back up, and then click Next.
         
      3. Recovery Manager scans the computer for storage devices. Select the storage device to save the backup, and then click Next.

         note:

         If you select a CD or DVD drive, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc.

         
      4. Depending on the media selected to store the backup files, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc, or a USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next.
         
      5. Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.
         
      6. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.

         note:

         If the backup process fails, make sure the capacity of the storage device is large enough to store the files, or try de-selecting some file types to reduce the amount of files that are copied. Other reasons for failed backups might be caused by file corruption. In some cases, it might not be possible to save files using this backup method.

      1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.
      2. Select the file types to back up, and then click Next.

11. Click OK in the warnings that display.
    
    
12. Recovery Manager reformats the Windows partition and reinstalls the original software.
    
13. After the system recovery is complete, click Finish to restart the computer. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup.
    
14. Once the setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
15. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
16. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

note:

If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is not functioning correctly, this method does not work and an error message displays. If an error message indicates that System Recovery cannot be run from the startup screen, a set of recovery discs or a recovery USB flash drive is needed to perform a system recovery. Follow the instructions listed in one of the following sections, depending on the recovery media available: Recovery from recovery discs (Windows 8) or Recovery from a USB flash drive (Windows 8).

1. Turn off the computer.

3. Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until the first screen displays, and then follow these instructions:

   3. The computer restarts. If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is functioning correctly, the Choose an Option screen displays. Click Troubleshoot.
      
   4. On the Troubleshoot screen, click Recovery Manager. Recovery Manager opens.
      
   5. On the operating system selection screen, click your operating system. Recovery Manager opens.
4. Recovery Manager opens. Under I need help immediately, click System Recovery.
   
5. When System Recovery prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:

10. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
11. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

note:

HP does not include recovery discs in the box with its personal computers as the recovery software comes on the hard drive. You can obtain recovery discs from HP Support, or use Recovery Manager software to create a set of recovery discs yourself. HP recommends creating a set of recovery discs when you receive your computer and storing them in a safe place. Support Sent Recovery Discs can take as long as 4 to 6 hours to complete system recovery, but recovery discs that you create often take less time to complete system recovery. For more information about creating a set of recovery discs, see Creating Recovery Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive (Windows 8).

1. Turn on the computer, and then insert the first recovery disc into the drive.
2. Press and hold the power button to turn off the computer.
3. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
4. Turn on the computer.
5. Immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens.
6. Use the up or down arrow key to select the CD/DVD drive. Then press Enter.
   

   note:

   More than one CD/DVD drive selection might be available from the list of bootable devices. If so, select one of the CD/DVD selections from the list to see if HP Recovery starts. If recovery does not start or a non-system disk error displays, restart the computer by pressing the power button, then repeat these steps to select another CD/DVD drive. When recovery starts, continue using the steps to complete recovery.

   note:

   If you cannot select the disc drive from the Boot Menu, disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Mode in the BIOS. For detailed instructions, see the Disabling Secure Boot and enabling Legacy Boot on a desktop computer (Windows 8) section in this document.

7. A window might display and prompt you to choose whether to run Recovery Manager from the hard disk or from the disc inserted. If this window displays, select Run program from media, and then click Next.
   
8. Select an option based on the type of recovery discs you have:
   • Recovery discs created from your computer:
     Click Factory Reset under I need help immediately. If the next screen prompts you to confirm your choice, select Yes, and then click Next. If no confirmation screen displays, continue with the next step.

     
   • Recovery discs received from HP support:
     Select one of the following options, depending on which selection is shown on your screen, and then click Next.
     • Factory Reset - Reset the computer by erasing the entire drive and restoring to the factory setup
     • Reset the computer by erasing the entire drive and restoring to the factory setup
     
9. When System Recovery prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
   • If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.
   • If you want to back up your personal files, follow these steps to create a backup.
     

     1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.
     2. Select the file types to back up, and then click Next.
        
     3. Recovery Manager scans the computer for storage devices. Select the storage device to save the backup, and then click Next.

        note:

        If you selected a CD or DVD disc, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc.

        
     4. Depending on the media selected to store the backup files, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc or a USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next.
        
     5. Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.
        
     6. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.

        note:

10. Click OK in the warnings that display.
    
    
11. Recovery Manager reformats the Windows partition and reinstalls the original software. Insert each recovery disc into the CD/DVD when prompted to do so.
    
12. After system recovery is complete, remove the disc. If the tray does not eject the disc, press the eject button on the computer case to eject the disc.
    
13. Click Finish to restart the computer.
14. Depending on which model of computer you have, the computer either turns off or restarts. If the computer turns off, wait 5 seconds, and then turn on the computer.

    note:

    If you are using Support Sent Recovery discs sent from HP, it can take more than an hour to complete the recovery process. Do not interrupt the recovery process. The recovery process is complete when the Windows Setup screens display.

15. Complete Windows setup when the screens display.
16. Once Windows setup has been completed, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
17. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
18. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

note:

For more information about saving a recovery image to a USB flash drive, see Creating Recovery Discs or Saving a Recovery Image to a USB Flash Drive (Windows 8).

2. Turn off the computer by pressing and holding the power button.
3. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
4. Turn on the computer.
5. Immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens.
6. Press F9 to open the Boot Device Options menu.
7. Use the up or down arrow key to select the recovery USB device. Then press Enter.

   note:

   If you cannot select the USB flash drive from the Boot Menu, disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Mode in the BIOS. For detailed instructions, see the Disabling Secure Boot and enabling Legacy Boot on a Desktop Computer (Windows 8) section in this document.

8. A window might display and prompt you to choose whether to run Recovery Manager from the hard disk or from the media inserted. If this window displays, select Run program from media, and then click Next.

12. Click Next. A message displays warning you that all devices should be disconnected from the PC. Be sure all devices, except the recovery flash drive, are disconnected, and then click OK.
    
    
13. Read and respond to the screens as they display. The restoration progress displays.
    
14. Remove the USB flash drive from the USB port.
15. Click Finish to restart your computer.
    
16. Depending on the model of your computer, the computer either turns off or restarts. If the computer turns off, wait 5 seconds, and then turn on the computer.
17. Complete Windows setup when the screens display.
18. Once Windows setup has been completed, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
19. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
20. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

note:

Use the following procedure only when you cannot select the recovery media from the Boot Option Menu or when you are using an external optical drive. If you are able to boot from the Recovery media or not, it is very important to reverse the changes made in the BIOS, this means you need to load the BIOS default settings. Otherwise this might cause instability in the system when making updates recommended by HP.

1. Turn off the computer.
2. Turn on the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Computer Setup Utility opens.
3. Use the left and right arrow keys to select the Security menu, then use the up and down arrow keys to select Secure Boot Configuration, and then press Enter.
   
4. The Secure Boot Configuration warning displays. Press F10 to continue.
   
5. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Secure Boot, and then use the left and right arrow keys to change the setting to Disable.
   
6. Use the up and down arrow keys to select Legacy Support, and then use the left and right arrow keys to change the setting to Enable.
7. Press F10 to accept the changes.
8. Press F10 again, and then press Enter twice to restart the computer.
   
9. As soon as the computer starts, a message displays indicating that the boot mode has changed.
   
10. Type the four-digit code shown in the message, and then press Enter to confirm the change.

    note:

    No text field displays for the code. This is expected behavior. When you type the numbers, the code is logged without a text field.

    The computer starts Windows 8.

8. On the Troubleshoot screen, click Recovery Manager.
   
9. On the operating system selection screen, select your operating system.
   Recovery Manager opens.
10. Under I need immediate help, click Minimized Image Recovery.
    
11. When Recovery Manager prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
    • If you have already backed up personal files, or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.
    • If you want to back up your personal files, follow these steps to create a backup.
      

      1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.
      2. Select the method you want to use to choose files to back up:
         • If you want to identify the categories of files to back up, select Auto Selection. This option allows you to select the file type to back up instead of selecting the individual files to back up. For example, you can choose to back up all picture files, all document files, and all video files.
         • If you want to select individual files to back up, select User Selection, and then click Next.
         
      3. Depending on the method you selected, follow one of these steps:
         • Auto Selection (recommended): Select the file types you want to back up, and then click Next. The File Backup Wizard creates the list of files to back up.

           note:

           This might take as long as 30 minutes to complete. Do not interrupt the backup process.

           
         • User Selection: Select Compression to make your backup file smaller, or select No compression to make no change to the size of your backup file, and then click Next.
           

           Click Browse Files to choose the files to back up, and then click Next.

           

           Select the files you want to back up, and then click OK.
      4. Recovery Manager scans the computer for storage devices. Select the storage device to save the backup, and then click Next.
         
      5. Depending on the media selected to store the backup files, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc or a USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next.
         Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.
         
      6. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.
         
12. The HP Recovery Manager Welcome screen displays. Read the on-screen information, and then disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
13. Click Next to continue.
    
    HP Recovery Manager prepares the computer for recovery.

    note:

    This process can take as long as 30 to 45 minutes. Do not interrupt HP Recovery Manager during the recovery process.

    

14. When recovery preparation is complete, click Continue to proceed to the installation phase of the recovery process. The computer restarts several times during the recovery. This is normal. Do not close, shut down, or disconnect the computer while HP Recovery runs.
    
15. Recovery Manager reformats the Windows partition and reinstalls the original software.
16. After the system recovery is complete, click Finish to restart the computer. Complete the setup screens and wait until the computer finishes the setup.
    
17. Once the setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
18. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
19. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

1. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware.
2. With the computer off, press and hold the power button to turn on the computer.
3. Immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup Menu opens.
   
4. Press F9 to open the Boot Device Options menu.
5. Use the up or down arrow key to select the CD/DVD drive, and then press Enter.
   

   note:

   More than one CD/DVD drive selection might be available from the list of bootable devices. If so, select one of the CD/DVD selections from the list to see if HP Recovery starts. If recovery does not start or a non-system disk error displays, restart the computer by pressing the power button, and then repeat these steps to select another CD/DVD drive. When recovery starts, continue using the steps to complete recovery.

   note:

   If you cannot select the disc drive from the Boot Menu, disable Secure Boot and enable Legacy Mode in the BIOS. For detailed instructions, see the Disabling Secure Boot on a notebook computer (Windows 8) section in this document.

6. A window might display and prompt you to choose whether to run Recovery Manager from the hard disk or from the disc inserted. If this window displays, select Run program from media, and then click Next.
   HP Recovery Manager opens.
   
7. Under I need immediate help, click Minimized Image Recovery.
   
8. When Recovery Manager prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:
   • If you have already backed up personal files or you do not want to back up personal files, select Recover without backing up your files, and then click Next. Continue to the next step.
   • If you want to back up your personal files, follow these steps to create a backup.
     

     1. Select Back up your files first (recommended), and then click Next.
     2. Select the method you want to use to choose files to back up:
        • If you want to identify the categories of files to back up, select Auto Selection. This option allows you to select the file type to back up instead of selecting the individual files to back up. For example, you can choose to back up all picture files, all document files, and all video files.
        • If you want to select individual files to back up, select User Selection, and then click Next.
        
     3. Depending on the method you selected, follow one of these steps:
        • Auto Selection (recommended): Select the file types you want to back up, and then click Next. The File Backup Wizard creates the list of files to back up.

          note:

          This might take as long as 30 minutes to complete. Do not interrupt the backup process.

          
        • User Selection: Select Compression to make your backup file smaller, or select No Compression to make no change to the size of your backup file, and then click Next.
          

          Click Browse Files to choose the files to back up, and then click Next.

          

          Select the files you want to back up, and then click OK.
     4. Recovery Manager scans the computer for storage devices. Select the storage device to save the backup, and then click Next.
        
     5. Depending on the media selected to store the backup files, the computer prompts you to insert a blank disc or a USB flash drive. Insert the media into the computer, and then click Next.
     6. Recovery Manager displays the progress in backing up and saving the files to the backup media.
        
     7. When Recovery Manager is finished backing up files, remove the backup disc or storage device, and then click Next to continue the recovery process.
        
9. HP Recovery Manager prepares the computer for recovery.

   note:

   This process can take as long as 30 to 45 minutes. Do not interrupt HP Recovery Manager during the recovery process.

   

10. Recovery Manager reformats the Windows partition and reinstalls the original software. Insert each recovery disc into the CD/DVD when prompted to do so.
    
11. When recovery preparation is complete, click Continue to proceed to the installation phase of the recovery process.
    The computer restarts several times during the recovery. This is normal. Do not close, shut down, or disconnect the computer while HP Recovery runs.
    
12. Once the setup is complete, turn off the computer, reconnect all devices and cables, and then turn on the computer.
13. Before using the computer, update and protect your computer by reinstalling any virus and security software that was installed before the system recovery.
14. Reinstall any software programs that were added after purchasing the computer, as well as any files that were backed up.

note:

Use the following procedure only when you cannot select the recovery media from the Boot Option Menu or when you are using an external optical drive. If you are able to boot from the Recovery media or not, it is very important to reverse the changes made in the BIOS, this means you need to load the BIOS default settings. Otherwise this might cause instability in the system when making updates recommended by HP.

1. Use one of the following methods to open the Computer Setup Utility.
   • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F10 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Computer Setup Utility opens.
   • Turn on the computer and immediately press the Escape key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Startup menu opens. Then press F10.
   To navigate the menus, choose menu screens by pressing the left or right arrow keys. Use the up or down arrow keys to move through the list of items on the menu screen. Press the Enter key to select an item and open a submenu. Then use the left and right arrow keys to modify the settings. Press the F10 key to save the changes and exit from a submenu, or press the Esc key to exit from a submenu without saving the changes.
2. Use the right arrow key to choose the System Configuration menu, use the down arrow key to select Boot Options, and then press Enter.
   
   
3. Use the down arrow key to select Secure Boot, press the Enter key, and then use the down arrow key to modify the setting to Disable.
4. Press F10 to accept the changes and exit or use the left arrow key to select the Exit, use the down arrow key to select Exit Saving Changes. and then press Enter to select Yes.
5. The Computer Setup Utility closes and the computer restarts. When the computer has restarted, the Operating System Boot Mode Change screen displays, prompting you to confirm the Boot Options change. Type the code shown on the screen, and then press Enter to confirm the change.
6. Use the left arrow key to select the File menu, use the down arrow key to select Save Changes and Exit, and then press Enter to select Yes.
7. The Computer Setup Utility closes and the computer restarts. When the computer has restarted, use the power button to turn the computer off.
