    Information regarding recent vulnerabilities

    HP is aware of the recent vulnerabilities commonly referred to as "Spectre" and "Meltdown". HP has published a security bulletin with patches for these issues and a list of impacted systems. We will continue to update the bulletin as more information becomes available and encourage customers to check the bulletin frequently.

HP PCs - Using HP Support Assistant (Windows 10, 8, 7)

This document pertains to HP and Compaq computers with Windows 10, 8, and 7.
HP Support Assistant is a software program designed to help you keep your computer in working order, prevent potential problems, and resolve issues quickly and easily. It also provides valuable system information that you need when troubleshooting computer problems.
In addition, you can manage all your HP devices in one place and gain access to updates, messages, troubleshooters and fixes, warranty and services, specifications, accessories, and support resources for your computer and devices.
For business computers, see Using HP SoftPaq Download Manager. This utility provides a quick and easy way to download software and driver updates for HP commercial notebook and desktop PCs.
This document describes how to use the features in HP Support Assistant to learn more about your computer and keep it running smoothly.
Downloading and installing the latest version of HP Support Assistant
Before using HP Support Assistant, be sure you have the latest version. If you do not have the latest version, or are experiencing problems with HP Support Assistant, see Download HP Support Assistant.
Opening HP Support Assistant
Use the following steps to open HP Support Assistant.
  1. In Windows, search for and open HP Support Assistant.
  2. The first time you open HP Support Assistant, a Welcome to HP Support Assistant window opens.
    The Welcome window displays various default settings. Change the default settings, if desired, and then click Next.
      note:
    For more information about settings, see Changing HP Support Assistant settings in this document.

  3. The Quick Tutorial displays, providing an overview of Support Assistant. To gain access to support resources for all your registered devices, sign in with HP Passport account. If you do not have an HP Passport account, on the fourth tutorial screen, click Create an HP Passport profile.

  4. The Create your profile page displays. Complete the information, making a note of the password you select. When done, click Save in the lower-right corner of the screen.

    HP Passport is a web-based application that allows you to create web profiles that simplify navigation through HPs website. It stores your basic personal information, such as user ID, password, name, and address so you don't have to retype the information when you return in the future. Your HP Passport profile information is protected by industry-standard encryption technology and follows strict HP privacy policies.

  5. The Sign in screen displays. Type your User ID and Password, and then click Sign in.

    If you have not created a profile yet, click Create.
  6. HP Support Assistant opens to the My devices window.

To open Settings, click Settings at the top of the HP Support Assistant window.

From the Settings window, you can change HP Support Assistant settings.
My Devices - Specifications, troubleshooting, and device specific information
This sections lists the information, troubleshooting, and other items that are available in the My devices tab.
My Services - Manage your subscribed services
The My Services category provides an easy way to manage your subscribed services and learn about available services such as SmartFriend, Instant Ink, and Care Pack.
Click one of the links for more information about HP services.

Support - Find HP support options
If HP Support Assistant does not resolve your issue, you can access available support options based on your product, location, and warranty status. This section describes how to get HP technical support for your device.

Use the following steps to get HP technical support.
  1. Click Support at the top of the HP Support Assistant window. The HP Support window opens.

  2. Next to Select your location, make sure the location is correct. To change the location, click the location name, then select the correct location from the Location window.
  3. To get support for your computer, click the box that contains your computer.
    To get support for another device, such as a printer, click the box that contains the device name.

    • Helpful tips. To view helpful tips, click Helpful tips in the Support resources section. The Messages window opens.
    • Troubleshooting and fixes. To view a list of troubleshooting and fixes, click Troubleshooting and fixes. The Troubleshooting and fixes window opens.
    • HP Support Forums. To connect with HP customers and experts to get more information about the issue, click Visit the HP Support Forums.
    • HP SmartFriend Assistance. To get phone access to trained technicians, click HP SmartFriend Assistance. The HP Services website opens.
        note:
      HP SmartFriend is a subscription-based service available only in the United States and Canada.
    • HP Product Support Center. To open the HP Product Support website for your computer model, click HP Product Support Center. The support website for your computer model opens.
    • Dispute your warranty. To dispute your warranty, click How to Dispute your Warranty.
    • Register an HP Care Pack. To register an HP Care Pack, click Register an HP Care Pack.
  4. To get a local telephone number, operating hours, and other information about technical support, click Get Phone Number in the Contact HP support section.
Profile - Update your HP Passport profile
On the Profile tab, you can view your personal information and see your products. In addition, you can update your profile information.
