A 'Cartridge Problem,' 'Ink Cartridge Failure,' or 'Incompatible Ink Cartridges' Error Message Displays for HP Officejet Pro L7300, L7400, L7500, L7600, and L7700 All-in-One Printer Series

Issue

After you install a cartridge, a 'Cartridge Problem,' 'Ink Cartridge Failure' or 'Incompatible Ink Cartridges' error message displays on the printer control panel. An icon displays on the control panel that indicates which cartridge is causing the error.
If the cartridge error message indicates that all four cartridges are missing when they are not, do not replace the cartridges. Skip to the solution to service the printer.
Important: You must follow these solutions in the order presented to resolve the issue.

Solution one: Remove, inspect, and reinsert the cartridges

Follow these steps to examine the cartridge or cartridges indicated on the control panel.
  1. If the printer is off, press the Power button to turn on the printer. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before continuing.
  2. Gently pull open the cartridge cover.

  3. Remove the cartridge that requires inspection by grasping it between your thumb and forefinger and pulling it firmly towards you.

  4. Align the cartridge with its color-coded slot, and then reinsert the cartridge into the slot. To ensure proper contact, press down firmly on the cartridge until it snaps into place.

  5. Repeat these steps to inspect any other cartridges indicated on the control panel.
  6. Close the cartridge cover.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution two: Check the cartridge compatibility

Make sure that the cartridges are compatible with your printer.
Purchase replacement cartridges and other supplies from the HP Store or local retailers.
  • If the cartridges are compatible, continue with the solutions in this document.
  • If the cartridges are incompatible, continue to the step to replace the cartridge.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution three: Reset the All-in-One

Follow these steps to reset the printer.
  1. Press the Power button () to turn on the product.
  2. With the product turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the product.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait at least 15 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the product.
  7. If the product does not turn on by itself, press the Power button () to turn it on.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution four: Remove and reinsert the cartridges again

Repeat the steps that you performed earlier in this document to remove and then reinsert the cartridges identified on the control panel.
  • If these steps resolved the issue, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.
  • If the issue persists, continue to the next solution.

Solution five: Replace the cartridge

Follow these steps to replace the cartridge or cartridges indicated on the printer control panel.
If you have a defective cartridge or printhead, it might be under warranty. To check the warranty on your ink or toner supplies, go to hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies, select your country/region, and then review the limited warranty information for your supplies.
  1. Gently pull open the cartridge cover.

  2. Remove the cartridge that requires replacement by grasping it between your thumb and forefinger and pulling it firmly towards you.

  3. Remove the new cartridge from its package.

  4. Align the cartridge with its color-coded slot, and then insert the new cartridge into the slot. To ensure proper contact, press down firmly on the cartridge until it snaps into place.

Solution six: Service the All-in-One

Service or replace your HP product if you completed all preceding steps.
To see if your product is still under warranty, go to the warranty check website http://www.support.hp.com/checkwarranty. Contact HP Support to schedule a repair or replacement. If you are in Asia Pacific, Contact HP Support to find a local service center in your area.
