HP Z820 Workstation - Removing and Replacing the Hard Drive Power-SATA Data Cable Assembly

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the hard drive power-SATA data cable assembly for the HP Z820 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The end user should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the hard drive power-SATA data cable assembly that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return", then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

On the new window, select Hard drive power-SATA data cable assembly from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:

    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect the SATA/SAS cables from the system board.
  3. Disconnect the hard drive power cable from the system board, Optical Disk Drive (ODD), and Hard Disk Drive (HDD) cable assembly.
  4. For each Blind-Mate connector, use a flathead screwdriver to push the retaining tab on the right side of the connector and then lift to disengage it from the slot in the chassis.
  5. Pull the connector out of the opening in the chassis.
  6. Thread the SATA/SAS cables out of the opening near the bottom of the chassis.
  7. Remove the cable assembly from the chassis.
