HP Z620 Workstation - Removing and Replacing System Board

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the system board for the HP Z620 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The End-User must possess extensive product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and be familiar with the operating system.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the system board that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:

The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

System board removal

  • This video was developed using a pre-production version of the workstation. The chassis and parts shown might not exactly match the current production version, but the part removal and replacement steps are the same.

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Disconnect all cables from the system board, noting their location for reinstallation.
  3. Turn the green locking lever 90 degrees clockwise to unlock the system board from the chassis.
  4. Slide the system board toward the front of the chassis.
  5. Rotate the system board up and lift it out of the chassis.
System board replacement
  note:
Remove the following from the old system board and install onto the new system board: Memory, heat sink, and processor.
  1. Lower the system board into the chassis making sure the standoffs on the bottom of the board engage with the keyholes in the chassis pan.
  2. Push the system board against the rear of the chassis.
  3. Turn the green locking lever 90 degrees counterclockwise to lock the system board to the chassis.
  4. Connect all cables to the system board.
      note:
    After installing a new system board, be sure to update the BIOS to the latest revision or to the version requested by the customer.
