HP Z620 Workstation - Removing and Replacing eSATA Adapter

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the eSATA adapter for the HP Z620 Workstation.
Minimum skill level
The End User requires no hardware-specific training to replace the defective part. The End user should have familiarity with system hardware and software requiring repair.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the eSATA adapter that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP. Click here for more information on returning parts to HP.

  note:
For customers in countries/regions with RoHS legislation (e.g. EU, China, etc.) restricting the use of hazardous substances in electrical equipment. The use of the "Original" spare part is regulated by RoHS legislation. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Modified" spare number, the "Modified" spare part must be ordered as the replacement part. If the unit contains a part that is labeled with the "Original" spare number, please order the "Original" spare number as the replacement part. In this case, either the "Original" or the "Modified" spare number may be shipped which will not affect performance or functionality of the unit.

To view a video demonstrating the procedure for removing the eSATA adapter, click here to view the HP Services Media Library and then click on Remove/Replace videos. On the new window, select eSATA adapter from the menu on the upper left hand side of the screen.
eSATA adapter removal

This video was developed using a pre-production version of the workstation. The chassis and parts shown might not exactly match the current production version, but the part removal and replacement steps are the same.
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to the product or loss of data.
  2. Remove any PCI card blocking access to the connectors.
  3. Disconnect the eSATA cables from the system board.
  4. Press the two release latches and rotate the PCI retention clamp until it is fully open.
  5. Remove the eSATA adapter from the chassis.
      note:
    If customer is not replacing the eSATA adapter with another option, cover the open slot on the PCI bulkhead with a metal slot cover.
eSATA adapter replacement
  1. If customer is installing a new eSATA adapter, remove the slot cover from an unused slot on the PCI bulkhead.
  2. Position the eSATA adapter in the slot.
  3. Rotate the PCI retention clamp down over the PCI bulkhead.
  4. Press the two PCI retention clamp tabs on the rear of the chassis until they lock into place.
  5. Connect the two eSATA adapter cables to the AHCI ports on the system board.
  6. Replace any PCI card if removed.
