Upgrade from Mac OS X v10.4 and v10.5

The latest HP LaserJet print drivers are built into Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. They are also included in Apple’s Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard DVD and available via Apple Software Updates. You do not need to download or reinstall any HP drivers or software for print functionality.

note:

There is no HP Print Utility support for select devices. To administer all networked HP LaserJet printers, use the Embedded Web Server by typing the printer IP address in the address bar of any web browser. Or, From Safari – open the Bonjour tab under the book icon pull down menu and select the printer.

To update a Mac using the Snow Leopard DVD, follow these steps:

Insert the Snow Leopard DVD that came with your Mac OS X 10.6.
Connect the computer to the printer using a USB cable.
Wait while the previous HP printer queue is detected, deleted, and then updated automatically by using the latest HP printer drivers included in Snow Leopard.

This process will create a new HP printer queue in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.

Step one: Download the driver or software from www.hp.com

Go to www.hp.com/go/support.
Click Drivers & Downloads, search for your printer, and then select your model from the list of search results.
Select your operating system.
Locate the driver that you want to download.

note:

HP recommends the Full Feature type of download, if available, to take advantage of all your product features. You can click the driver title description to view the minimum system requirements and any additional information before downloading the driver.
Click Download, click Save, and then wait for the file to download.

Step two: Install the HP drivers and/or software

Use one of the following methods to install the HP drivers and/or software:

Method one: Install using a USB connection

note:

HP recommends using a USB cable that is less than 3 m (10 ft) long.

Turn on the printer and the computer.
Connect the USB cable to the rear port of the printer and to any USB port on the computer.
Exit any open programs on the computer.
Browse to the file you downloaded previously, and if necessary, extract the files.
Double-click the HP Installer icon.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

Method two: Install using a local Network connection

note:

Apple does NOT support AppleTalk in new Mac OS X 10.6.

You can connect to HP printers on a local network that uses Bonjour, IP, and Open Directory, as well as shared printers connected to an Apple Airport base station.

note:

HP does not support peer-to-peer networking as this is a feature of Microsoft operating systems. See the Microsoft site for assistance with setting up a peer-to-peer network connection.

Select File > Print.
Open the Printer pop-up menu and select your printer (it might be listed in the Nearby Printers submenu). If your printer is not listed, select Add Printer.
Wait while the system searches for your printer.

note:

Normally, a dialog displays with a list of any Bonjour, IP, shared, and/or Open Directory printers on your local network. On larger networks, outside the Bonjour link-local network, your printer might not be listed. If this happens, use the printer IP address to connect to the printer. An IP printer is a network printer that uses TCP/IP protocol (such as JetDirect, LPD/LPR, IPP) to communicate with your printer. You will need to know the IP address or DNS name.
Click IP in the toolbar.
From the Protocol pull-down menu, select HP Jetdirect - Socket.
Enter the printer’s information available from front panel or network configuration page.
The system should automatically bind to the HP print driver in the Print Using pull-down menu.
Click Add to create the HP printer queue for your HP LaserJet.

Method three: Install using a Wireless connection

Step one: Install the driver

Make sure that you have the following requirements before you begin:
- A USB cable (for use only during driver installation)
- Administrator privileges or password
- Network name or SSID (Service Set Identifier)
- WEP key or WPA security passphrase
Make sure you have a wireless-capable HP printer and place it near the computer.
Turn on the computer, make sure it has internet access, and is connected to the wireless network.
Exit all applications running on your computer.
If you have already installed the software using a USB connection, skip to Set up the wireless connection.

If you have not previously installed the software, connect the USB cable to the rear port of the HP product and to any USB port on the computer.
Browse to the file you downloaded previously, and if necessary, extract the files.
Double-click the HP Installer icon.
Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.
When prompted to select a connection type, select Configure your device for a wireless network, and then click Continue.

Step two: Set up the wireless connection

note:

In Finder, click Applications, and then double-click System Preferences.
Click Print & Fax.
Click Open Print Queue and then click Printer Setup.
Click the Utility tab and then click Open Printer Utility.
Click HTMLConfig.
Click the Networking tab and then click Wireless from the left pane.
Under Communication Mode, click Infrastructure, select your network SSID from the Available Network Names (SSID) list, and then click <<.
From the Security Mode pop-up menu under Authentication, click WEP or WPA/WPA2.

note:

Your selection will depend on which Wireless Security Protocol your network uses. If your network does not have Wireless Security, leave the Security Mode set to Open System (No Authentication).
Type your WEP/WPA/WPA2 key, and then click Apply.
In the confirmation box, click OK, and then close the HTML Config and Print Queue windows.
In the Print & Fax window, select your printer from the list, and then click the Minus sign to remove it from the list.

note:

This action removes the USB Connection from the list so that the only queue for your HP product is the Wireless Connection.
Disconnect the USB cable from the product and the computer.
Under Printers, click the Plus sign.
Select your printer name, select Bonjour as the Kind, and then click Add.
Close the Printers & Fax window.
