HP 620 Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing the Keyboard

Introduction
This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP 620 notebook PC.
Minimum skill level
The End-user should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.
Tools required
  • Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdrivers.
  • Small Torx (T8) screwdriver.

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

Keyboard removal
  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. On the bottom of the notebook, remove the two 3 mm P1 Phillips broad-head screws identified with a keyboard icon that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  3. Remove the three 7 mm T8 Torx screws identified with a keyboard icon that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  4. Remove the 3 mm P1 Phillips broad-head screw below the fan cradle that secures the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  5. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel.
  6. Lift the rear edge of the keyboard and slide the keyboard toward the rear of the notebook until the tabs on the front of the keyboard are free from their respective slots in the top cover.
  7. Flip the keyboard toward the front of the notebook and rest it face down.
  8. Gently lift the locking bar on the keyboard ZIF connector and remove the ribbon cable.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Remove the keyboard from the base enclosure.
Keyboard replacement
  1. Place the keyboard face down on the palm rest of the notebook.
  2. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to secure the keyboard cable in the ZIF connector.
  4. Flip the keyboard toward the center of the notebook and insert the tabs on the front of the keyboard into the slots on the top cover.
  5. Lower the keyboard into position and press along the edges of the keyboard to secure it to the top cover.
  6. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  7. Replace the 3 mm P1 Phillips broad-head screw below the fan cradle that secures the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  8. Replace the three 7 mm T8 Torx screws identified with a keyboard icon that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
  9. Replace the two 3 mm P1 Phillips broad-head screws identified with a keyboard icon that secure the keyboard to the base enclosure.
