HP ProBook 6440b Notebook PC - Removing and Replacing Keyboard

Introduction

This document is provided to assist in removing and replacing the keyboard for the HP ProBook 6440b Notebook PC.

Minimum skill level

The End-User should possess product-specific knowledge and technical skill on how to service the system, and have familiarity with the operating system.

Tools required

  • Small, Phillips-head (P1) screwdrivers
  • Small, flat-bladed screwdriver or a flat-bladed alignment tool

The replacement part number will vary depending on the keyboard that is being replaced. If a part is listed as "Yes" under "Requires Return" then the defective part needs to be returned to HP.

Keyboard removal

  1. Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below by clicking on the following link:
      caution:
    Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.
  2. On the bottom of the notebook, loosen the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws marked with a keyboard icon.
  3. Turn the notebook right side up and open the display panel fully.
  4. Using a non-metallic flat bladed tool, slide the retention tabs on the top edge of the keyboard forward.
  5. Lift up on the top edge of the keyboard and slide it toward the rear of the notebook to release its alignment tabs.
  6. Flip the keyboard toward the front of the notebook.
  7. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the keyboard ZIF connector and disconnect the keyboard ribbon cable from the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  8. Using minimal force, lift the locking bar up on the pointing stick ZIF connector and disconnect the pointing stick ribbon cable from the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  9. Remove the keyboard from the base enclosure.

Keyboard replacement

  1. Place the keyboard face down onto the palm rest.
  2. Insert the pointing stick ribbon cable into the pointing stick ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  3. Push the locking bar down to lock the pointing stick ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
  4. Insert the keyboard ribbon cable into the keyboard ZIF connector on the system board.
      caution:
    Use care to prevent damaging the ZIF connector and ribbon cable.
  5. Push the locking bar down to lock the keyboard ribbon cable into the ZIF connector.
  6. Flip the keyboard over and toe the tabs on the bottom edge of the keyboard into the slots on the top cover and lower the keyboard into position.
  7. Close the display panel and turn the notebook upside down.
  8. Tighten the three captive P1 Phillips-head screws marked with a keyboard icon.
